Basic 9, 10 and 11 length picture.

Nice, you know, that B9 is just a 3/4" drum sander away from looking the same as that B10.5 for a lot less work. ;) I figured out what you did pretty quick with the short ricasso and then saw you explained it once I scrolled down. Great job with that very practical mod.

I haven't tried drilling INFI yet, I wonder does cutting oil help make a difference at all? It seems to sand/file very easily compared to other steels I have played with though.

I might be tempted to mod a B11 that way myself... been debating modding my small choil B9 to look like that. Do you know if there is any more or less shock/feedback to your hand with the modded B11 than before when chopping hardwood? If less, that might be a very desirable mod.

My issue with drilling was that I had carbide twist drills instead of carbide straight flute die drills. So because I was drilling manually in a drill press, I couldn't control my feed rate enough to not bust the cutting edge off after a few rotations. With the proper tools, I'm sure it would be easier.

As to modding a 9, it would look similar, but the placement of the talon hole would force the choil to be a lot larger than what I ended up with. I looked at that option ;)

As to the shock when chopping hardwood, I hadn't noticed any abnormal vibration. We are mostly soft wood country around here though, so my hard wood chopping is limited.

Now that I'm done with it though, it feels a lot faster in hand, but still hits like a brute.

Definitely did. I ground a fair bit of steel off. When I had just shortened the tang it still felt like a B11, now it feels fast but solid still. It probably brought the balance back a good 3/8" anyway.

Love the Basic-11, but preferre the Basic-9 for the same reason as you; faster in the hand and really no diffrence when chopping.

And yes INFI (or M-INFI) is a bitch to work on, you understand how tough INFI really is when sanding on it.

Pic from making choil on my 7, first working with my Dremel, then finishing off with this metal-tube and grit 240 to make it perfekt round.
