Basic 9 -vs- The Dog Father -vs- Battle Rat

I had a Battle Rat, Basic 9, & Dogfather all at once and put them head to head. If I remember correctly, the Dogfather was the best chopper of the bunch, but I really prefer the "feel" of the Basic 9. I sold the BR, because it was my least favorite of the three. I keep trying to tell myself that I should let the B9 go and "settle" for the Dog Father as it will outchop the B9, and I don't often carry a knife of this size very far and if I do it's in a daypack and the differnence in weight isn't that noticeable. I haven't measured, but the DF handle feels bigger than the B9. If I get some free time this weekend, I'll try to give them both a more proper work out and get back to you.

Thanks a lot, Tyrkon. I have been on the lookout for a B9, and now you have just caused the price of them to go up. I will have to console myself with the bargains I scored on the B5 and B7.

Old basic lit. if it helps.

One point that I'd like to share... if you do end up in that SHTF scenario, I think a Res C handle would be great. Someone once mentioned that if you did have to chop thru a wall, the Res C would insulate any "live" electrical wires you may need to get thru or hit. A full tang would... well... you get the picture.

Fry you? Kind of like the Nice Brass Rivet in the tang of the Basic 9? :p

I think you would be up the same creek.

As mentioned previously: the basic 9 is perhaps Jerry's best balanced blade that ever exited the shop. Pick one up and see how well it fits in either paw. While mine has less power in the chopping department than the DF, the 9 offers about 95% of such ability while having a better 'feel' in the grip. The lighter, more carefully balanced knife would also be easier to use for a longer period of time. I don't care if somebody offered me $500 for mine, I am keeping my modified INFI until the cows come home.

The grass is not always greener on the other side. It may be nice to own a Basic 9 but I doubt you'll notice any appreciateable difference from the Dogfather. Yea, there's some as mentioned but I too cut for my firepit with the DF and I have no need to look further unless there was something vastly better. At the price, I think not.
