Because it is doubtful that I will invest in the equipment needed to produce my own blades, my grinder needs are not as demanding as a full on custom makers. Mostly I need one for shaping handles and guards and sheath edges. So a 2" 48" belt model in the $500 ballpark would do me fine I think.

Is this sound thinking and are there any obvious choices?

It probably will, but I am working on a 2x72 for the same money. I have to build it, but the kit seems doable for a reasonably handy person.

You could even just get a craftsman 2x42. The belts can be cut to 1in or even less. Trugrit has a bunch of different belts for them. IIRC they're like $160 at sears.

These are tasks that are better done at slower belt speeds and $500 bucks is not going to get you a variable speed machine, at least not one that I know of. You might get in that ball park building the Polar bear Forge Sling with a 1 hp motor and TECO VFD. If you want to just remove metal, then the Craftsman 2x42 is what a lot of knife makers start out with. It's biggest drawback is it's so darn fast. Mine would burn the edge of a sheath in a heart beat. Didn't like using mine on handles for the same reason, it would hog off too much wood or burn it.
