Basic Bowie question

Hey I see so many bowies I Just do not know what is really a bowie, bush bowie, gentelmans bowie..... Itseems to bring to mind in the general public something that is big. So What is the essence of bowie.

These days the meaning of the term has been so watered down, I think it tends to mean "anything with a blade and a handle". The definition of "big" also seems to have changed over the years.
