I finished the rubber "Horse stall mat" handle on the FFBM project. I know they still look big, but this is a chopper and not a fine detail knife. The large grips really give you something to hang onto and not slip. I can always remove more material after I use it some, but couldn't put it back had I removed too much at the start. The original knife has had the profile of the spine redone, a rounded blade spine, thinned convex zero edge and a satin finish.

Here it is at the start, looks to be "Heavy's" size at this point!

Here are the finished knife pictures:

Wow!

How thick are those things?

I'm curious to how it fees.

The horse stall mat handles seem to be the "rage" now on some choppers. Looks cool (but thick).

Way to go! :D

Looks great! And would have to absorb plenty of shock while giving a secure grip.

I'm thinking i might buy a CGNMFBM just to send away for the randucci "hone-y pony" treatment... rubber handles and a grind/profiling!

That looks great. You can do a lot of swinging with that thing without it 'getting away from you'.. :)

Very nice. Did you have any trouble with the tubing and the contouring of the mat?

Wow!! So now to find out how that bad boy chops with those killer handles!!

looking good, was the horse mat hard to finish?

Actually the mat was pretty good to work with, I'll have to admit, having a KMG grinder with different radius wheels does make it much easier. I wouldn't want to do it by hand or a hand held sander of some kind. I used a 40 grit belt the whole time. It didn't "chunk" off the material like I thought it would, came off very smooth actually. There was a lot of black rubber flying, but it didn't smell bad like micarta or have the dust that micarta has. The glue actually keeps the handles on, the rivets just help stabilize the handle from lateral movement (which I think will help in preventing any chance of the handle ripping off), plus provide a forward hole for a lanyard if desired. The rivets installed just like they would in micarta, I just didn't need as much pressure to flair them because they are not seated. I did add a little super glue around the edge of the hole to harden so it wouldn't stretch as much. I did a rivet test installation and it was actually pretty hard to pull out.

Here is a little better picture of the handle showing it is actually tapered from front to back, I know, it still looks too thick, but you just have to feel it to see what I mean. I'll bring it to Blade West for all to see.

Very very nice all around. Please keep us updated on its use and comfort. Can you see any drawback to using the mat material? Thanks for pioneering this with a Busse and on this forum. I must say, members like you and Ban really help us noobs work up the courage and desire to mod INFI and give us great in depth information for doing so.
