Basic FFBM????????........................

You did a really good job on making those but why? Isnt that a crappy material?

SWEET! That's just what I had in mind in my thread! I believe you about the thick scales, the knife I handled had WAY thicker scales than I like and I didn't think I'd like them until I got to wreak some havoc :D

"Isn't that a crappy material?"

Well, I guess it depends on how you look at it. It cost about the same as micarta, it is softer than micarta, but much more shock absorbing and grippy. It is the same material as most all the Pro cutting competition guys use on their specialized knives, so it can't be too bad as far as performance. Is it as valueable if I were to want to sell it? I don't know, it would depend on the buyer, some might prefer the way it came from the factory and others might want it more for the handle. I can always put the original handles back on, but I have altered the blade profile, at this time, I'm not worried about the future value of the knife. I just feel that sometimes you need to do some experimenting to move forward, sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't, you only really loose if you don't try............. :D

Looks like you won here....that is if your goal was a monster chopper with the handles to take it to the next level! ;)

:) I just thought it was crappy material, sorry . I was thinking it is was like a rubber floormat type stuff.
You obviously have talent , can you make some textured aluminum slabs?

Man, I wish I could grind that well. Beautiful job, randucci. The handles look a bit utilitarian along side such an awesome grind job, but I understand the idea. Great job.

Nice work Rannducci. Tell me, are you going to enter into any chopping competitions with it?

I think the knives used in most cutting competitions have to be forged, rather than made via stock removal. If stock removal knives were permitted, Busse would have dominated the competitions by now.

I didn't mean to sound defensive, the Horse stall mat is just that, ground up recycled rubber that is used to make a floormat for horse stalls and trailers. I think it happened to be handy for someone one day to try and it seemed to work out. I don't consider it a high quality material, just one that looks like it will work, time will tell. If I don't like it, I'll just put a custom micarta handle on it.

"Can I make some textured aluminum slabs?" I suppose so, but the aluminum would be much harder to work with than micarta and I like micarta better, doesn't get cold or hot according to the weather conditions.

I never thought about how much I liked rubber handles until I got a Fallkniven. It's not replacing a Busse for me, but it's another option. Different flavor for a knife freak.

There is some real use to this type of handle.

Stays put in the hand, very low slippage.

While not so durable as micarta, great retention with low shock transfer to the hand.

I have an old beater with this type of handle.

A great handle if taken care of.
