i figured you guys would know the best tools for basic sheath making would be

and the best place i could find them at

ooo

I second the video mentioned above. But for some tools required, you will need stitching needles and thread, a groover, a stitch marker to lay out your stitch spacing, at least some sort of border tool, and a mallet, a rubber hammer works. some contact cement, and a sharp awl. You can find all of this at Tandy leatherfactory.com They also have inexspensive leather craft books to help.
Hope this helps.

If you live near a Tandy store they may even have a class you can take to get started. It cuts that learning curve way down. Check craigslist.org too for leatherworking tools.

Take a look at some of the sheath posted and that will give you some ideas of tooling to add a little decoration to your sheaths, there are quite a few that are available and tooling is not very expensive.

My dad, who is a very experienced leather tooler/worker, helped me to make my first simple sheath. The tools and supplies I used were:

Leather - about 8oz
Knife - to cut leather
Drill press and small drill bit - to make holes for sewing
Needles - two of them
Artificial sinew - the "thread"
Rivets and tools
Snap and tools
Leather dye
Leather sealer
Shoe Goo - contact cement
Cardboard - to make the pattern from

I "eyeballed" the spacing of the stitching holes and the sewing is on the surface of the leather rather than in a groove. It wasn't the prettiest thing in the world but it's holding a knife. It's kind of like making your first knife, my first sheath was pretty lame, but my second sheath was less lame. The sheath I was working on this weekend with my Dad will have some rudimentary decorative cuts and stamps, and the sewing will be in a groove. Even LESS lame!
