Basis for your Knife Purchases?

If it's cool, pointy and sharp, I like it. I buy knives for any number of reasons. The design, the steel used, the type of grind, who made it, etc.. But, basically, if I have money and there is a cool knife within reach, I buy it.

I've been in Sales a very long time and there are Four Main Reasons Why Anybody Buys Anything: Want, Need, Use and Afford.

The greatest of these is WANT. People buy things all the time that they'll never use, don't need and can't afford, but once they decide they want it they'll rationalize it any way they can until they get it. Why would buying knives be any different.

Another interesting things is everybody likes to own things, but some people don't like to buy things and nobody wants to be SOLD anything. That's why statements like, "You should see this knife I just bought." and "You should see the knife this guy sold me." Have two different connotation.

Need > Want > Want More > Want Better

I have finally gotten over the "want more" phase.

Unfortunately, I am guessing that "want better" is even more expensive.

IMPULSE

It hits me at the strangest times. I will read about something I have never heard of, or didn't think twice about. I will do a search here for others' responses. If it gets a good reply, I will then search the internest dealers for availability and price. If I can find one I will order it. It's like a junky trying to find that next "fix". I turn into Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde, my fingers flying over the keyboard in this intense quest to find the next victom. I can't get my darn shipping address and credit card numbers in fast enough. Once the order is complete, I return to the "old" me. Strange isn't it?

Actually, I believe this to be quite a common affliction (here in Bladeforums anyway).

Replying to this thread made my trigger finger itchy. The next post I read was from Brandon -B- about his P-SARK. I did a quick search, and damned if I didn't just order one! While I was ordering I thought "boy one of those skull clips would sure be sweet!" so I ordered one of those too. Then I thought "man, that clip is aweful small to waste a good box on, better order something else to fill the empty space!" so I ordered a grey and blue Lethal Edge T-shirt. My bank account is really suffering!:D

I try to avoid impulse buys. I can't think of a single one that ever pleased me. I buy based on a number of things... design, overall quality, actual use, and versatility.

No impulse buying here. I broke myself of that habit with fishin' rods.
I "allow" myself a bowie a year (a commerative, if you will) and maybe a little pretty shiney pointy at the NY show.
I've got the basic slots filled with good, dependable users , so it is all gravy now :)
I really enjoy the search for my yearly knife(maker).

Simple. I love knives and bladed weapons...swords, spears, halberds, etc. Each tool has its own unique characteristics no matter how similar the seem to be. The more experience that one has with the myriad varieties available, the better prepared one will be when using and defending against them. It's kind of like studying martial arts and only practicing against your own systems' attacks...no good. Most likely, you'll encounter someone that approaches fighting differently than you are used to and you better know how to deal with it (if that's what you're into). Even if you don't care for a certain style (or knife), it is a good idea to know about them.
Anyway, I try to stay away from impulse buys, but sometimes find myself buying based on a perceived "cool factor".
Other than that, once you have been afflicted by BAD (blade acquisition disorder)it is nearly impossible to stop.
This is the basis for my knife purchases.
Happy Holiblades!

It seems like most of my buys are based on info from this forum, tempered with a little impulse.

I try to fill in niches in my collection, like different handle materials, different types of steel, different blade styles, lock types, etc. I really don't get knives based on a specific use. I adapt whatever knife I'm carrying to whatever it is I'm doing. Obviously I don't do a lot of major cutting, and don't spend much time doing the "outdoors" type stuff. If, or when I do take up those activities, I will have a whole new catagory to collect for.

For now, the coolness factor of a knife is my major criteria in buying, and I'm way behind:D:D

Peer pressure from BFC members. If Joe Talmadge, Steve Harvey, and a bunch of other folks have BM 710s, I have to have one too! :D

But seriously, if a knife looks nice and I can find a use for it I'll buy it when I can afford it.

I like knives. As I am looking at them and handling them, one will call to me. I don't really care who made it or why. After a certain quality level is attained, then it is just a matter of what feels good in the hand and what appeals to my asthetic sense.

I've bought a lot of knives on impulse this past year. Many have been because of forumite's suggestions and rave reviews. But now that I am making folders I find that I'm channeling a lot of that money into tools, equipment and raw materials so my recent knife purchases have become very selective. I now buy knives mostly from other makers but I will still buy the odd piece on impulse especially if it's cheap and interesting!
