Bass Pro Shops acquiring Cabelas: Fate of the Cabelas 110?

I bet they keep it. It looks like BP will keep the Cabelas brand if I read it right. I better buy one just in case.

Nod. Victorinox said they would keep Wegner, too.

I think the economics favors consolidation. The real issue isn't the brick and mortars so much as the web sales, I think.

Anytime there is one of these major acquisitions it seems more is lost than gained. If Cabelas has something unique to them that is wanted, best buy it now.

I always thought they were owned by the same company anyway. Their catalogs have always been very similar.

Seems like Bass Pro would do better to focus on the watersports side of things, while Cabela's would handle hunting. But what would I know.

What I'll miss is the "Gun Library," which is sure to disappear along with the price competition to BPS.

I think the writing has been on the wall for a while. Cabelas has been struggling for years. I'm surprised that it was Bass Pro that bought them out and not Dick's since they're trying to grow the Field & Stream stores picking up Cabelas would have been a great move.

Where I'm at, we have a Bass Pro, Field & Stream and Cabela's within a 20 mile radius, along with a couple of Dick's stores. I get mailers almost everyday. The competition for my sporting goods dollars is strong here.

I don't shop very much at Cabela's but Bass Pro Headquarters is an hour away in Springfield, Mo. Recently I snooped around in the gun department. Prices there were at least 30% higher than any other gun store I've visited. My last visit to a Cabela's had about the same result. A bargain in either place is hard to find. I don't go to any of them if I know of any other place that has a similar product.

Johnny Morris started by selling fishing tackle in his fathers liquor stores in Springfield. I read recently his net worth is $4 billion. He must be doing something right but not on my dime if I can keep from it.

I agree, it is usually bad for the customer.

I preferred Cabela's years ago when it was a destination to go to, they had things I couldn't find easily elsewhere, and their prices were OK. Now, prices at both are rather high and likely to go higher now.

Another reason to shop hard at you local gun/knife shop!

Around here (upper midwest): hardly any Bass Pro, Cabela's yes, and Gander Mountain. Basically, Gander is Cabela's main competitor and higher priced, at least for ammo.

"... Bass Pro Shops runs 99 stores and employs about 20,000 people, ....... Cabela’s has 19,000 employees and 85 stores located in the U.S. and Canada."

Agreed. I'm a firm believer in supporting the local "Mom & Pop" shops. A Ruger rifle caught my wife's eye at Cabela's, so we went to our local gun shop the next day, and had them order it for her. Paid a little bit more, but I know they'll be there for us if it ever needs service. But mostly because our local shop owner was on the national NRA Board of Directors for years, and continues to fight the good fight at the State and local level. He deserves my support!

I've always been a bigger fan of Cabelas. I'm hoping they don't dissolve completely. I buy ammo from a local shop/range because it's cheaper and fishing gear isn't a huge expense so I don't mind picking it up anywhere. I think Cabelas clothing and stuff like that is awesome and it's not expensive. I have both stores the same distance away and given the choice I'd go to Cabelas every time without question. Looks like I have to buy some new Bucks while I have the chance...

The only reason I ever walk into a Bass Pro is for fishing gear because that's what they're good at. Cabela's has a much better firearms/ammo selection and better prices on those too. I wish it was the other way around and Cabela's was buying out Bass Pro.

My company uses the meeting rooms at the BassPro headquarters from time to time. We had a meeting down there a couple months ago and the rumor then was they where buying Cabelas guess it was more than wishfull thinking. I personally like Scheels better then both of them but I will miss the Alaskan guide series knives. I might have to get that 119 while I can.

I've only ever been to Cabela's once, and never to a Bass Pro. I didn't really browse around too much while in Cabela's either. This acquisition is not likely to affect me one way or the other. I'm not too worried about the Alaskan Guide name going away. What has me a little concerned is if they dump Buck for some Chinese manufacturer like Taylor. Most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference between an AG 110 or, say, an AG Schrade with black teflon coating or whatever they put on it. I'm glad I got my AG 110 when I did. Maybe it'll be a collector's item one day. :D
