Howdy,
I have come across threads about this series through my searches but came across different answers. (Cow and Camel bone)

Does anyone know which animal ? I have the 102 Woodsman and love it.

Thanks !

Yes the BP Bucks were Cow bone.

JB,

I swear I read where most knife manufactures use "South American" cow bone for their scales. If I am remembering correctly it was because they felt those bones were 'stronger'.

I have no idea of the truth and especially where Buck buys their bone stock.

My wife having lived there for 5 years would agree. They've not had some more modern breeding introduced and are by in large still a hearty range cattle. This is concerning the cattle of South America not what bone Buck used. DM

On their website, Case advertises that they buy Cow Shin Bones from South America, so I wouldn't be surprised that others would too. They don't say why, either cheaper or better bones I would imagine.

BPS SFO Buck 105 Pathfinder made in 2014; I know it's bone but not where Buck sourced it from. OH

Thank you all for the info.

Since I started the thread, I guess I should post a picture of mine :). (102 Woodsman version)

This is my carrying knife when I fish.

I read years ago, that almost all "bone" used in US knife handles is cow shin bones and comes from Argentina. The main reason given was that the bone was stronger and less porous because they do not pump their domestic cattle full of antibiotics as growth promoters in the feed like we do here.

We're in agreement, on bovine shin bone from Argentina. Toward the reason I'll let it go as it could go South. DM

hi men , those things looks really cool , and where did you get BP BUCKS?

thanks

Bear, I respect you too much to argue with you.
Dingy, Welcome. BPS= Bass Pro Stores. A big box store chain here in the states. You can find them on auction site too. DM

I believe that South American cattle are range cattle and that may have something to do with the bone structure.

All I can here is that in nature animals with longer legs, longer wings, etc. have stronger dense bones than shorty animals. So maybe long legged range type cows are better handle donors. That's one reason Giraffe bone is so costly. 300

When the Colonel moved his family to South America he spoke about the 'Giant' bovine he would see there. These most likely being of the Chianina breed.
They are indeed giants of the bovine. Originated and bred in Italy well over 2,000 years ago and were regularly seen in the sale rings at Seville, Spain and destined for countries around the world. I suspect these shin bones could be traced to this breed. Being of a very hearty, large type range cattle, they would have strong bones. For a good read on a snowy winter day (like here today) google and look at some picture of this breed. You'll be amazed. DM

Little off topic but was wondering if the this bone series of Buck knives is a limited production or does Bass Pro always have them.

Had a 119 when I was a kid just read through this thread and these bone series look to be very nice!

Cold, Welcome. As items like this go... These are likely a Limited Production run. If they sell well it's likely they'll be brought back. As other Buck--- Bass Pro items have returned. DM
