Well I've taken up fishing again after a 10 year hiatus. Been having a blast on the water.

I'm familiar with bluegill and other panfish and can fry them up pretty good. One of my favorite foods actually.

However, I'm new to bass. The lake I fish didn't have a lot of bass 10 years ago but now there is a ton. I've seen pros and cons to eating bass.

I caught a couple today and threw them back. Figured a sport fisher chasing the big catch would have more fun with them then I would eating it.

Any of you guys eat bass? How do you cook it? Youtube has some good videos on how to fillet them. Maybe next time I'll keep one.

Store-bought beer batter mix works wonders. I only get a bass shore lunch once or twice a year, but when I do, it's a real treat.

Alternatively, I like bass done up in an iron skillet with some olive oil, cracked pepper, and diced onions.

Happy fishing,

- Mike

I love largemouth bass. I just season it with a little lemon peper dredge in flour and fry to a golden brown. Very tasty.

Filet the bass
Lay out aluminum foil and turn up edges to make a makeshift pan
Coat pan with butter
Sprinkle bass filets with lemon, salt, pepper, and garlic [I use crushed whole garlic]

Lay on BBQ pit and allow to brown slowly. Do not turn filets. Once the top is a golden brown, the fish is ready to eat. I am unsure on the time since it has been a while, but it isn't more than 15-ish minutes.

I fish largely for Large and small mouth bass, but I do it for sport. I do occasionally keep one for the plate but very rarely. I much prefer the flavor of trout. They are good eating but I find that the smaller bass taste better than the bigger ones. So throw the big ones back for us sport fishing guys ;)

I did today. I got my fun so I figured I'd let somebody else chase him.

I caught a nice 8" one too, he probably would have been good eating.

You can seal it up in foil with your favorite additions .Chives, parsley, salt and pepper, lemon, white wine. You can then put it on any heat source and the fish steams.

Hmm some bbq bass sounds good. Might be good wth a little zesty ginger sauce.

Thanks for the ideas guys, I may try one soon.

Here's a simple little Texas recipe that is great for largemouth or smallmouth bass.

Dip filets in buttermilk and shake off excess liquid. (yeah, I don't like buttermilk either but it tastes great on fried fish)

Roll in zatarain's seasoned fish fry and deep fry in hot oil at 350-375 degrees. Sprinkle lightly with your favorite seasoned salt when done. (I prefer Knorr's Aromat seasoning)

Dude that's a fat ol' bass tonym! Is that a pumkin or watermelon colored lizard or kreature thingy? I have not eaten bass although I've got a few. It seems like many people frown on keeping them chosing to throw them back so they can get bigger instead. I'm mostly a trout fisherman and catch and eat them up when I can!

i like frying any fish in white cornmeal since it doesnt add the strong corn taste that yellow corn meal does. it also adds a sweeter taste to the fish. i'll mix some table blend mrs dash in with it then coat the fillets with the mixture. i found out you have to be careful frying fish with white corn meal since it doesnt brown up quite as quick as the yellow. its a good idea to test a piece after it starts to get brown.

Flour with a little cornmeal, and season with lemon pepper or Lawry's to personal taste. Fry it up good, and enjoy.
