BATAC = combat or utility blade?

Hey all,

I recently scored a very nice Mashed Cat sheath for my CG BATAC which will allow me to carry it concealed with greater ease when I'm visiting the less savoury parts of town.

But despite the name is this a combat blade or more of a utility piece?

The skull cracker would suggest the former but the drop point blade isn't exactly ferocious.

Should I be looking elsewhere for a more combat orientated piece? I do enjoy the 4 - 5 inch size for self defence.

Any suggestions?

A blade in the pocket is worth two in the safe.
I love my BATAC and would not hesitate to use it to defend myself. I don't see it as lacking in the least.

Is it legal in your State to carry a Knife as Large as the BATAC for Self Defense??

I dont think its so much the state as the country he lives in. :p

For me BATAC is a great utility knife. Very good all-arounder. You can slice, doce and even chop with one. But as regards self defense I would choose blades with much pointier tip and lighter like HG 55 for example or a Ratmandu or Camillus CQB.

Go with the SAR5. More edge, shorter overall package for carry.... and a bit lighter I'll bet.

Hmmm....... I think I prefer the BATAC. I like the integral guard.

What about the ASH-1? Too much for concealed carry?

combat = used in a military field of engagement
utility = used in civilian or military applications requiring a knife
fighting = used in hand to hand conflicts

It depends largely on what you want out of each of those catagories, but by and large the batac is a combat knife. It is designed to be as unbreakable by hand as possible while still being able to be used as a functional knife. It has a skull crusher pommel because it may have to be used in a hand to hand conflicts while in the field.

as a utility knife it's a bit thick in the edge and the tip. The active duty and others are considerably thinner in every regard and are still strong enough to be very difficult to break by hand.

As a fighting knife it is way over built and has a choil. This is my own view and others will vary greatly in their definition of a fighting knife. For me a fighting knife is this:
1: a butchers knife. It's entire purpose is to disassemble the human body, it needs to be good at it. The only thick and obtuse knife in a butchers block is the cleaver. The best slicers look like kitchen knives, thin stiff and acute, The best stabbers look like the fairbairn sykes. The batac has neither of those qualities and struggles at either task by comparison.
2: as safe as possible for the user. This means a secure grip, and snag free design meaning no choil. Many here have never had a problem with the choil snagging on fabrics and plastics and other materials like I have (and a few others). For utility purposes it doesn't really matter, for survival situations it can become very very important.

The batac is very much a combat knife. It can be used in a fight just as any knife can and is good as a hard use utility knife, but it is designed to be unbreakable by hand. It's design does not lend itself well to excelling as a fighter.

I love my Badger LE but if I was worried I'd get a gun, or training or both.

Quite. Im not sure what the length of knive that is allowed to be carried here in SA myself, although I know they have at one stage even tried to ban pepper spray.

In any case, what about something like the chutemandu....?

that smiley is an infraction on this forum, just a heads up.

I don't know much about south african politics, each province may have slightly different, or drastically different, knife laws. a bunch of states here are attempting to, or outright banning, the video taping of police in order to stem lawsuits over police brutality. You have to be aware of your local laws on a yearly basis since they can change quickly.

Trust me. If you poke some one with the BTAC they will be poked!

It has plenty enough point to go all the way to the guard easily on people. I guarantee you with a reasonably forceful poke, you will split ribs and hit what ever is behind them.......and I mean easily.

A knife with a reasonably sharp edge will be vicious against flesh. Even some one wearing a heavy leather jacket = no problem. If you doubt me, go buy a human sized pig or goat. Put a heavy leather jacket on it and slash and poke with force and see what happens.

I agree with LVC (at least the parts that aren't about a choil, haha) ;)

I think an HG55 or an Urban Grudge is what you want in a concealable fighting knife.

Nothing wrong with a BATAC but for defence in SA I would prefer a CZ75 or a Glock ..... there were plenty of those in SA the last time I was there ....

Thanks for the heads up, but WHY then include it in the smileys available in the first place....? Logic fail I guess.

The country as a whole has the same laws, it does not differ by province as it does in the states.

What the BATAC is good for is limited to what the user is willing to use it for.

Don't think I'd have trouble using it as a general purpose knife, or in a fight.
