BATAC = combat or utility blade?

Dude--- a 3" blade is all you need. If... you know what you're doing. :)

The BATAC is perfect in my estimation for all intended purposes listed. I use it exclusivesly for my forms and would never hesitate to use it in defense.

Nothing wrong with a BATAC but for defence in SA I would prefer a CZ75 or a Glock ..... there were plenty of those in SA the last time I was there ....

Funny, I just shot my Dad's new CZ75 today. Shot real nice!

As to the OP's earlier Q about edc'ing an Ash1, if you went with a skinny, a lot of it would depend on your build, and what kind of carry set up you decided to use. The Btac handle I think will print less, because it does not have the pinkie tail thingie.

I have the GC ash, and it would be heavy to lug around all day.

The Blade shape and handle combo feel perfect for stabbie slashy work.

I'm not at all sure that I know what I'm doing man, but I think the bigger the blade the better. Certainly if people like Bill Bagwell are to be believed. It gives you a number of advantages, most significant among them being superior reach. Kind of like the long gun vs handgun argument. A long gun is superior to the handgun as a weapon in almost every respect with the major exception being concealability.

I do have a Colt Series 70 (the govt will allow you only one handgun) but I'm just more of a knife guy than a gun guy. Plus the Colt is a real brick to carry so its more of a house gun these days.

I know what you mean about weight - especially in a hot climate. I went down to George on the coast and the gunsmiths there had a nice G26 Mini Glock in. You can load it as light as you want for the mag in the pistol .... you don't "have to" carry a full magazine .... it can take a standard G19 mag extending beneath the grips as a reload and you can carry one of those in the car incase you need it. It is a great light weight pistol and you will easily afford it if you are Px'ing a Series 70. I assume yours is in 9mm ? Everything seems to be in SA. I agree for everyday carry a light pistol is a blessing.

As for using a knife... I think you answered your own question when talking about "reach" .... in SA in the "out of town" encounters you are likely to find anyone intent on doing you harm having a machete .... more likely though some very cheap pistol. Both of which outreach a BATAC .... especially if you're sat down in a car and get caught out.... and especially if there are more than one person to deal with.

Get a light pistol for the "defense" aspect and use the BATAC for a great general purpose knife. IMO in SA you definately should be carrying a pistol for self defense for you and your family.

No its a .45ACP....

I would love to get a G26 or G19 but the new laws here make acquiring a new firearm very difficult and painful. I'm not even sure if I will be allowed to keep the Colt. I am waiting to hear if they will re-license it. Luckily for me it takes forever so while I wait my old license is still valid.

Anyway, I dont go out looking for trouble but I like to have something decent on me just in case. I seem to have acquired a few 4-5 inch fixed blades that cover it nicely.

I wouldn't mind something a little bigger like the ASH-1 though. Seems to me to be another great all-rounder!

Well if applying for a variation on your ticket is going to raise your head over the parapet so to speak .... I can see the attraction of sticking with what you have got.

I "desperately" tried to get the very pistol you have when I was over there .... anything in .45 was what I wanted .... given the advantage of that calibre I would "definately" stick with that pistol. I don't know if this helps .... it depends on what you do for a living and the clothes you wear .... but for me I did'nt need to wear a suit out there so I carried mine in a fly fishing waistcoat which had lots of pockets. I could carry all the gear I needed in it and no matter how hot it got I could easily just wear that. I also looked like I was not carrying and could take the jacket off and no-one saw the pistol as it was in a pocket. Easy to wear and carry as the weight was over the shoulders and back. It just fitted nicely in the larger zipped pocket. No irritating "hitching" of the pants etc ....

Mark--- I carry a folder for SD. Learning basic knife techniques is vital.
I wish you could get that Glock. I LOVE my G17.

My preference for a knife for SD in a back up role is a folder as well .... easier to carry and have with you at all times .... I got this one custom built here in the UK and it has been all round the world with me .... by Mike Lamprey it is one of the better take down designs for SD .

You can boil the knife out when stripped and clean it thoroughly. Very useful feature in something used in locations where "justice" can be "bought" or is the subject of a "political agenda" .... parts of Africa and you would'nt have a prayer trying to say you needed to defend yourself against a local .... it's the same in South America too.

I conceal carry mine fairly often. It will do just fine in a fight. The only thing that would make it a better fighter is a sharpened top edge and a little more aggressive point. But it will do just fine.

I do carry a SJTAC a bit more often, though.

Don't let the naysayers dissuade you; carry it and be safe.

When in doubts, apply Lunde's principle - (c) Lunde: Make life simple, get both!

How about a SJTAC with a sharpened top edge like this Satin Jack Variant from 2006 "BLADE West Left Overganzaaaaaa!!!!!!"

I was typing this long post, but I think I went to far with it. So I'll try to be brief this time.

A combat knife should be comfortable in every grip and should not force you into any particular grip, ability to be used effectively in any situation is what for me defines the edged weapon.
I was able to switch and flip my batac as quickly as I thought it, and it was comfortable. I'd do fine with BATAC, but for me it was to big to EDC (not even talking legally, but comfort level.)

Do not fight with knives. Conceal and strike. Surprise and concealment are you best friends if knife is your option.

If I had to ship out, I'd take the ASH-1, it can simply do a lot more things then most other knives in relatively small package, pry, dig, chop, cut.
If I was doing wet work, then I'd take the UG.

For back up, I would carry the fatty GW. Maybe its not the best fighting knife there is, but I have yet to find a more comfortable handle for me.
