Batoning vs Feathersticks?

Generally, I split some kindling up and then make a featherstick.

THIS works for me every time

This Friday I showed my Lady friend how to baton and split 2" wood then how to make feather sticks
I have purchased her a SS Mora Companion
She then practiced these skills


She prepared a suprise carrot salad
She again practiced these skills
The carrots were quatered length ways and the quarters were perfectly feathered for the salad!

I just walk around the woods and grab the appropriate tinder, twigs, and sticks.
Especially considering efficiency, I see no reason to create things I can simply find.

Ditto. The only exception is when all the wood is wet. Then I split until a feather stick can light my fire

how many people choose path of least resistance ?
if they are in a paid camping spot , with precut wood to hand just split andmake some tinder and kindling
if they in the bush , just use whats there cos its usually pretty abundant
if they making a camp on the roadside like when we are trecking across the country just do whatever is easiest at the time ?
I know I dont sit down to make feather sticks if there is a bunch of dry gumleaves I can crush up instead , or some kerosene bush handy , but if there isnt much around I will do what I have to to get a fire going if one is needed

Doesn't take much, either. Fill up an 8oz water bottle and stick it in the pack. Just pour a little on your kindling, toss in a match or a spark and away it goes. Not the classiest way to make fire, but if you're cold or hungry...

At deer camp? Gasoline. Doing the "survivorman" thing in the woods? Split kindling and pickup small bits.

If wood is that wet or you have lots of snow. it might be easer to carry a road flare. not as Dangerous as having gas sloshing around in your pack. LOL
