Batoning with a rock?

So I've noticed time and time again that Bear Grylls uses a rock to baton with. I know it's Bear and all and we all have our opinions of him but my question is has anyone actually done this before? What kind of damage occurs to the knife and what situation would warrant actually using a rock?

Stupidity?

Stupidity?

LMFAO - i was thinking the same thing but I'm sure there is someone on this forum that has done it before.

It just surprises me that in a forest filled with deadfall that one would choose a rock to strike their knife with.

Lofty Wiseman suggests in his book that you do this.
Generally I wouldn't do it but if it was the only baton I could find and I absolutely needed to, I wouldn't hesitate.

I have seen it done many times with a CS Busman. I probably wouldn't do it to my knives, but if I needed to and a rock was handy I guess I would.

I think I might, possibly, maybe have done it once when I was a kid, and if I did, I might have learned that it was not a good idea. If I did, I might have found out that a.) the rock broke (may not have been a very good rock), which caused me to hurt my finger, and b.) dad, being rather upset with me for bashing the back of his knife with a rock, whopped me up alongside of the head. Said dad then told me to never do it again because it was hard on the knife. If I had of ever hit the back of a knife with a rock (which, of course, I wouldn't have, because I was a brilliant child), I'll never do it again. I promise.

Bear hitting knives with rocks? Stupidity. Besides, he doesn't have to pay for them and, if he breaks one, they just give him another one.

Maybe someone should whop Bear up alongside the head. Just sayin.'

Seems like a remarkably bad idea.

If there is wood to baton, there is wood to use as a baton.

ive used a limestone rock to baton my mora when dressing a deer, and one other time on a pig. didnt do any damage

i wouldnt do it to my umnum but whatever

So, is this a bash Bear Grylls thread or a W&SS thread?
In a survival situation, where you have no other baton, would you use a rock? I would. My life is more important than the spine of my knife.

Well, Rotte brought up an excellent point: "If there is wood to baton, there is wood to use as a baton."

Nuff said.

i've used a rock, and i've used an iron bar...when there is no wood to use, i'll use what i can find without hesitation...

If you can't find some wood to baton than you really don't have any need of a rock, unless you are trying to baton the knife through another rock.

Rotte is right - when you need to baton wood you logically have wood available!

I have used a knife to chop a piece of wood which I have then used to smack the back of the knife to split other wood - kinda like karma for the knife, it hits some wood for a while then it gets hit by the same wood for a while.
