For me hatchets vs batoning depended on the activity. Camping for a period of time meant more gear, and more firewood needed so the hatchet came with.
Hiking and extended hiking meant traveling light and fast; getting off the beaten trail with minimal equipment- batoning with a suitable bushcrafters-style knife (Kephart type for me).
