Batoning

simple

you carry a small knife and a few bottles of scotch and baton.

or you carry an axe and sit around your fire sober.

simple, but the choice is yours

I ended up in the emergency room a couple of months ago due to a drunken batoning incident. Low down dirty Ash1 got halfway through a tendon. Good news is my blood was thinned from copious amounts of alcohol, so the blood spurted gloriously.

Well... I got a helluva snort out of that one.

That could probably be the best argument for batoning I have ever read, anywhere. The only thing that would make more sense is substitute bourbon for scotch. That could be just a personal thing, though. :D

that is indeed a fine arguement!!

in my case, i have trouble using a hatchet due to nerve damage in my hands, but I have little trouble batonning...
and I dont want the kid using a hatchet at this uncoordinated stage of development for reasons she has demonstrated, but she is a champ at batonning... so she gets to do it for me whenever possible.
of course, she will volunteer to do it just for the chance to use one of the Busses.

I had a feeling some porker would say that.:grumpy::D

I was tempted to take pictures of the carnage, but I don't particularly enjoy it when others share theirs... so I restrained myself. I do have a nice little scar though (that would show up in a picture btw;)), and the dang thing still hurts when I bump it.

Think in terms of survival, or long camping/hiking trips where keeping weight down is a necessity. Instead of lugging along a hatchet, Khukri, or Axe AND a knife, if you have just one knife that you know you can baton with you don't have to tote the extra poundage, and you can still accomplish MOST missions.

This is why I'm so fond of the straight handled Satin Jack. Has considerable length to baton but doesn't have the cumbersome height of the Ash or SFNO, carries so well you hardly notice it on your belt, slices great, excellent handle shape. With no axe or large chopper with you, you still can do about anything with it. It's still my favorite blade.

This about sums it up!

Just use a wood wedge and a smaller steel wedge set at 60' to the wood wedge when you rehandle. This makes for a much tighter connection and the head stays solid longer IME. Buy a few steel wedges where the axs are sold in HD or lowes, Etc. Keep at least one in your woods kit for handle replacement.

never (for me). I've dehandled 3 axes that used steel wedges, and I'll never do it again unless I have too. standard steel wedges historically are dangerous because they can help to split the grain of the handle causeing cracks and breakage, but for me it all comes down to the rehandling process, and how exponentially more difficult it is with the steel in place. I can wedge small scraps of wood into the loose area's to tighten it up and then soak it in oil rather then use steel.

in regards to batoning - I can do what an axe can do with my belt knife, and that's one extra pound+14" or more of akward carry that I don't have to mess with. I have a series of axes for home use, and for well planned and controlled short distance camping, but for long distance or spur of the moment, I like that my knife is all I need.

LVC if that works for you that's your thing. Everyone does things differently and that's ok. I've used axes, hatchets and knives my whole life. Each serves it's purpose and then some with a bit of ingenuity thrown in.

After all of the excellent input, I have assembled the ultimate baton package. The WSS may not approve but WGARA:D

I'd like an older Satin Jack, but after Jarvis nearly single-handedly ran up the market price on them, who can afford one now?
