Hard to describe without visual aid, but basically you strike the spine of your knife/axe/machete with a stick in order to drive it through a bit of wood, esentially using it as a splitting wedge.

I almost always use an axe to split wood. Most knives I carry are 3.5" or under, which gives them fairly limited splitting capability anyway. I also find that an axe or hatchet just plain works better.

EDIT An RC-3 does work too!!

One thing I've found, is while extremely tired, (i don't just mean winded, I mean really, actually exhausted) Batoning gives a bit more control while splitting, and less fully swinging huge sharp objects around. Again, it's a special situation, but when manual dexterity is compromised by cold or being tired, it's not a bad way to open up wood safely.

My intent for this thread was to get some discussion going for differing perspectives and it seems to have worked. The environment in which you operate and the situation at the time will have a major influence on a technique used. Thanks Folk's. I baton all the time, as I love to do it. I do use an axe, occasionally. However, I do it because I like to use my knife and give it a workout. It is fun for me, I don't necessarily always use the wood the day I do it, as my house is heated by gas.

Hubby and I both use axes and mauls, we would only use a knife in an emergency.

Using a knife is less tiring than swinging an axe or hatchet I've found. And as someone said a few posts up I also get better control using a knife.

Splitting a lot peices is a different story, and once you get into the pace of using an axe, you'll probably find that easier and more comfortable. Getting campfire or small cooking fire fuel ready, I prefer a knife.

A knife has the advantage of being lighter and carried easily (and concealed if that matters), and also can be used comfortabaly in a wider range of uses.
