No, those are the new tacticle-tassles that the Ms. Tacti-cool Parade twirlers are using this year. They are heat-treated to a 62 hardness!

I always use an old machette I hit spine to spine, all wood can hurt your hands and really vibrate bad. The SJTac I always use has no damage from the metal on metal contact but the machette is pretty messed up. Ive split hundreds of logs with it. Plus the machette has a handle, easy to use with gloves and wet hands.

Get in there!

I think a small wooden baseball bat would work really well. Or try the old tried and true wooden fish knocker like this:

You can even get it personalized. Have "Wood Whacker" stamped on it so everyone knows what it's used for:D. I'm sure there are more plain models out there so look around.

Like others have said I just use a piece of firewood for this. Free and usually at hand:thumbup: .

A nice rawhide mallet like the ones used in a metal shop for forming would do well and last a long time:thumbup:

i would think that space is a premium when hiking or backpacking. i have always used about an 18" x 2" or so piece of dead fall or a baton i cut on site.
remember if you carry a baton with you that same space could have been used for three or four beers.

Wiser words were never typed...

Piece or handy Wood, Nylon Hammer, Steel Hammer,Back of a Roofing hatchet, a Rock, the back of a Hatchet or the Back of an ax.

This is why I like Big Busse knives with the Coating ground off of the spine, stops the Spalling of the Coating.

I'm with Heavy on this one. Whatever is handy. Is this case it was the half burnt log. The small offshot branch was perfect to grab onto. It pounded the HR thru with no problem.
