Just got back from Batson's. It was my first hammer in, and first time meeting in person anyone who made knives. Pretty interesting, but a little colder than I was expecting. :o (I was the only guy I shorts, I think. It was warm and muggy when I left home.) Also, I wish I could have seen a couple more demonstrations, though I think I got the basics of forging a simple blade down from watching the demonstrator teach some kids.

Edit- I think Don Fogg was the only person I saw that I'd heard of from here. Anyone else see me if I didn't see you? (Idiot in the blue jean shorts and black t-shirt?)

Hey I didn't see you there but wanted to tell you that there are a great bunch of knifemakers in Columbus/ Phenix City and they meet once a month. I just moved from Fort Benning last summer and I'll gladly get you in touch with them if you'd like. I was just surprised when you said you'd never met another knifemaker!

I was there today (Saturday) met some people guys from Fogg's forums, met some of the vendors I buy from. Darren Ellis and his lovely wife Kathryn are great to deal with so are the ladies from Pop's. Ran into Ray Golden, he's a local guy that was mentioned very well in Blade for the high quality of his sheaths. Got an invite to his shop, made me very happy.

I may be heading up tomorrow am to buy one of those adjustable height knifemaking anvils I saw on Fogg's forums because it'd be about half price if I had it shipped.

Best thing for me besides seeing people is to see some real Scagels. I must've stood there 45 minutes just looking at the curves.

edited to add: I think I saw you there, I was the guy in the brown sweater with my fiance and her teen daughter and daughter's friend in tow, they were the kinda punk/goth kids. Looks like there may be some more lady smiths coming into the ABS :D I'm trying to convince them that they can make good money making a decent pouch sheath but they want to make knives.... sheesh I can't convince anyone in the house to do leatherwork for me :(

Batson's Hammer-In is always a very special event every year. I'm sorry that I was too busy to make it down there.
