Battle Mistress Design?

I have owned many different Busse knives, some I have parted with and some that I never will. The one design I have never owned is the Battle Mistress. I have always had something else to chop with that never forced me to make the investment.

Recently on a camping trip a friend of mine destroyed his dedicated chopper quite easily on a piece of wood that any Busse would of had no problem with. I will not mention the brand name of the blade he was using, but it is generally regarded as a good knife by many on this website. That being said it got me thinking that maybe it was time for me to purchase the ultimate chopper, the Battle Mistress. I can't think of another chopper that is stronger and has a better guarantee.

My question is this, out of all the different configurations that Jerry has made the Battle Mistress which one would you purchase as the best chopper. Weight is important to me so if it is a heavier design that I buy I want it to be head and shoulders better than a lighter one. I have been hesitant on ordering the current offering only because I get the impression it is more of a machete than a chopper. Am I wrong?

Any experienced help is greatly appreciated, speculation is not.

I did read the excellent review that PeterPHWS posted recently. It left me wondering how the FBM would have stacked up in the mix.

Thanks!:D

check out threads that Ankerson has videos in, he does a comparison between them and there are few threads here with weights and sizes

Ankerson's vids are excellent, and they all point to one knife as the chopping king:

NMFBM

There are two Busses that can out-chop it, the Killa Zilla and the MOAB. But I've owned both, and the extremely blade-heavy balance on both is such that I think the NMFBM is by far the easiest, most controllable to use. It is right at the outer limit of my ability to control during prolonged use without undue fatigue, and I would still recommend always using it with a lanyard through the front talon or through the front tube fastener for added control and safety.

Per your question as to which is the best chopping Battle Mistress, this is the one.

From the videos, it seems the NMFBM was the clear winner, with the FBM a close second. Good stuff.

It's really starting to seem that way. Thanks for your input.

Well actually I don't know if that video is fair, I think the NMFBM LE might be the best chopper, it's a bit thicker at .27" and has a different edge. Ankerson will just have to buy one of the LEs and let us all know =)

If all you want is a pure chopper, with weight not a major consideration, then the NMFBM is the one. If you wanted more of an all purpose big camp knife, then the CG FBM fills the bill.

I'd say that if price is a concern, and you want something thicker or heavier than the BWM, go for a regular FBM or a Fat FBM.
The NMFBM is indeed a big chopper, but was pretty limited in it's run, and is commanding a pretty high premium. Good Luck.

For a straight design, nothing will outchop the nmfbmle with that full convex grind. You could pick up a NMFBM, and do the convexing your self and save some coin.

Heck, even FBMLE's have gone down in price. They are literally hundreds less than they were going for two years ago.

My chopper is the fbmle with a convex edge. It is a heavy sucker. Not as much so as the FFBM.

I have never chopped with anything else in the Busse family, so I am not the best advice giver.

I don't have a NMFBM to compare it to yet but I got a Full Flat FBM at .27 from this guy right here ^^ (Thanks again LK) and I gotta say its a beast. Bites crazy deep and its easy to control.

And if you want a little more ease of handling, the 2007 special edition of the FBM is also superb.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. :D

Yes the NMFBM is the best chopper and it's really not too heavy, lighter than the FFBM with a better balance. :)
