If ash is good enough for baseball bats it should would work for a shillelagh. How big is the knob at the top? I like Cold Steel's version of the Irish Blackthorn but the top is not very ergonomic. I really like these as an alternative to carrying a weapon in places where it's illegal to do so such as national parks. Great work!
