I was wondering if anyone has had any feedback regarding Bawaidamann blades? I'm in stuck and can't make a decision. I either want the Bawaidamann pogn fenrir or the Spartan horkos. I particularly like bawaidamanns uber scabbard. Thoughts?

Spartan makes knives. Their reputation that includes industry leading designers like Bill Harsey speak to their quality. This other guy seems to be a hipster pop art designer who sometimes makes tacticool mallninja stuff. There is no question which one I'd choose.

What he said. The motto under the header on the website made me lol. EDC - PRACTICAL - TACTICAL. I'm not sure any of the products I saw fit any of those categories.

If I recall correctly, Spartans founder began under the tutelage of Chris Reeve... nuff said.

Bawaidamann products are currently listed on Spartans website. That leads me to believe that his name carries some legitimacy. Anyone have any firsthand knowledge?

Spartan does not sell his knives. They sell two of his sheath attachment systems. Again, this guy is first and foremost an artist, not a knife maker. If you are fine with that and like his stuff then go for it. You asked for opinions though, his knives would never make it into my hands.

They look quite good, for movie props, but for actual use I'd stick with Spartan. They design knives to use and then make them look good, rather than designing them to look good and then trying to make them useful.

I own/ have owned a few Spartans and have met the people that run the company...I say Spartan.

Amcbeachin, welcome to bladeforums - a tite knit group of frequent faces and usual suspects. The Bawidamman Beatdown!

One look at Bawidamann blade designs and I can't help but think Todd Begg; there's a guy you won't see so eagerly bashed and labeled around here. I own neither Bawidamman or Spartan, but if I had to buy a knife from one I'd certainly go with Spartan. The Bawidamann Pogn Ferir and Spartan Horkos are very different designs, which leads me to assume you're making a purchase primarily off of looks rather than functional application, especially considering the fact that one knife is made from stainless and the other is made from cpm CRU-Wear. With a price range of $300+, I'd recommend you skip both those companies and go with Survive! Knives(S!K) or Carothers Performance Knives(CPK). You might not think they look as tough, but you know what they say about judging a book by its cover. They're actually much tougher steel and, even more importantly, now come in at the top of the game with the Delta heat treat. Keep in mind these company's knives are currently in high demand and aren't as readily available. Just my 2 cents.

On a final note I wouldn't recommend making a knife purchase decision based off the accompanying sheath. I'm a neck knife fanatic so I understand the importance of a well designed sheath where I can draw and seat my blade effortlessly with one hand, and that's why it's nice we have so many custom sheath makers these days should you be unhappy with the original.

Good luck!

The Knives of Bawidamann blades are primarily made by Ben Bawidamann. The artist and designer is his brother, Andrew Bawidamann.

For Amcbeachin question:
Those knives you want to compare are very different, so you should tell us what you are willing to use it for.

Bawidamann Blades as well as Spartan Blades have excellent reputations of their quality. The POGN has a fine edge and needle like tip. That may be useful for selfdefense, but not for working in hard material like wood. The knife itself is also too small for hard use, so it should be considered as some kind of backup weapon.

The Spartan Horkos however is an allrounder for many different kind of use due to its design and size.
