My wife wished to go to Reno for a big rodeo there. Soooo off to Reno we went by car. This is a 14 hour drive for us so long ways. I don't gamble much, or drink much and don't really like crowds or traffic so Reno in general wasn't a good fit for me. It was fun, there was some great things, like Harrah's car museum, the rodeo was good, a visit to nearby Virginia City was good but not really wheelchair friendly.

BUT what was really great and made the whole trip worth while was a visit to Auntie live and in person. I'd contacted her prior to going and she agreed to a visit. So early one afternoon we found her place and I had such a great time. Wife learned a lot and really liked Auntie right off.

I asked if she happened to have a 25" Sirupati about as I've wanted one but was concerned it would just be too big. Auntie took wife as I could'nt access due to the chair, went in the house where she gifted wife with a beautiful scarf, or shawl, not sure what you call em but it's pretty, then off to the back someplace, and back to me with a gorgeous Siru in hand. Wife took pictures of the storage area and I knew I had to find a way to get there to see it.

Managed to utilize my van lift to get over a curb and then worked our way around some stuff and got with in sight of the door and the the blade show began. Think of it as a Tupperware party for Khukri's. I couldn't really see inside but Auntie started going back and forth bring out different knives, there was a ton of them and I fell in love over and over and over again.

Saw some of the new Ani? knives, bonecutters, on and on and on. Swords, bowies, one had such beautiful fullers on it, I nearly teared up, I just sent a message to auntie on that one, I can't remember what it was, an ang kola I think but I was on sensory overload. Totally overwhelmed. Wife learned a lot and wants me to show her some of the stuff on the website for history and stuff about the kami's etc. This will make things much nicer when I want another blade, hopefully she will remember the visit for a long long time.

I knew from my emails with Auntie that she was a classy and very nice person. This was really confirmed in person. Just a super nice lady, very personable. I was a bit reluctant to bother her and we had so much to do in such a short time that I nearly didn't make the visit but I'm so glad that I did, it was again the highlight of the trip for me, and I'm eternally grateful that she allowed us to visit. It was perhaps only a half hour or 45 minutes but I loved every second of it.

Here's my photo evidence. Pictures or it didn't happen, I know the rules. As I went to hand the Sirupati back to Auntie she asked if it was on my want list, I told her it indeed was, even more so after having held it and she said then you keep it. I pleaded although not hard enough to pay, it was too much of a gift but she would have none of that. I was and still am awestruck.

I'm the fat guy in the wheelchair. I wanted to get a picture of Auntie and my wife but in all the excitement we didn't get that one.

Thank you again Auntie for allowing our visit and of course the gifts. To get them from you personally makes it very special indeed.

Great job, Bawanna, You are a lucky man.
As much and as closely as I've worked with Auntie over the last couple of years, I have yet to meet her in person. It is at the top of my bucket list ahead of finally seeing Nepal. If I had to pick between the two, I daresay that i'd just as soon visit Auntie than go overseas, even though I've already seen Reno a couple times long ago, once to be married there just when HI was getting started.... I just wish flights from NY to NV weren't so darn expensive. I've oft thought of hitchhiking, but I are too old to probably survive doing that. Sometimes I do still regret having moved back home to NY from CA, as I was only a few hours away from Reno.

Classiness only begins to describe what kind of person Auntie Yangdu is......

I really do feel lucky, very lucky. I suspect Nepal is not very wheelchair friendly so as much as I'd love to visit there I'm completely content with visits to Auntie. I'd go twice a week if I could. I expect it will be awhile before I'm in Reno again but if I road trip anywhere in the area I'll sure try to stop by and visit.

It was pleasure meeting both of you and hope we can visit again in next year!

Bawanna and his lovely wife

Thank you for posting those Auntie. I really wanted a picture of you and Irene but in all the excitement I didn't get it done. A picture of the 3 of us would have been super but we didn't have a cameraman.

Hopefully next trip we can do that.

Hopefully my singing the praises of this wonderful lady we respectfully refer to as Auntie won't get old but I have one more addition to share.

While visiting I held many many nice knives of course and was completely knocked over by a 18" Ang Khola. Beautiful fullers, couldn't stop thinking about it. Sooo, I emailed auntie to find out what it was and she remembered my excitement on that particular blade.
I told her I must have it. She responded with what I thought was a very fair price of 165 bucks plus shipping. Saying it was perfect and not a blem. I didn't really care, I really want. So she says she will send today. A few minutes ago I get a message of a 75 dollar credit in my Pay Pal, never got money so I'll have to figure that out but I find that it's from Auntie????
She says when she looked first time she didn't have glasses on and when she looked with glasses she saw a hairline crack in wood handle. So she felt bad since it was not perfect!!
The integrity of this lady we affectionately refer to as Auntie never fails to amaze me. Honesty and a quest for perfection, something we really don't see much these days.

Now I can't wait to see this lovely addition again. Might have to work on a display rack this weekend so I can enjoy them all at the same time.

Thank you again Auntie, wife balked a bit originally but since she's met you she doesn't seem to balk nearly as much. I think she likes you very much too.

That's awesome, man. Every time I hear something new about this company and the people who run it the more impressed I am.

Bawanna and Auntie,

This story just made my day!

What's left to say but thank you for sharing!

Wow, I am nearly speechless!
Thank you for sharing your story about such a wonderful visit and an exceptional human being.

Great story! Although I have never met Yangdu in person, we have exchanged a few emails. Even in an email, the nice person she is comes through.

Great story from the wonderful folks in the HI family. Congrat on the new acquisitions, Bawanna! Must have felt like a kid in a candy store...I know how I would have felt.

I was dreaming of a fat wallet and a shopping cart. Auntie's show and tell just got better and better and better, I know it was random but is was almost like she had it planned or something. Everyone of them very pretty but every one of them very functional as well. That's a great combination, something pretty that really works.........

Great story, and I agree, auntie is a great person, haven't had the opportunity to meet her yet, but with the interactions I have had with her on my four knives, an engraved UBE, engraved Silver MTD AK, BAS, and now the Sirupati, she is a very fine woman, with an extraordinary sense of style, and honor, unlike much you will see now a days.

Hopefully, I'll get to meet her this year, when the family goes to RENO for Hot August Nights and Ribfest.

Bawanna where in WA are you from? im in Tricities

I'm opposite corner, in Monroe hour or so NE of Seattle. I know a few people in your neck of the woods. One works at Hanford, we meet annually week after next at Curlew Lake up by Republic. I always check to see if he glows in the dark, so far so good.

I just received the 18" Ang Khola Auntie sent me minutes ago. Just as pretty as the one I held during our visit. It's a beast, pretty heavy but she sure is pretty. Got fullers that just knock ya over. Very pretty wood in the handle and I really had to look to see the crack she mentioned. Her glass's must be better than mine.
I'll try to take some pictures for evidence and show and tell this evening after I leave the sweat shop.
I brought my Pen Knife today so I have two beauties to behold all day long. I feel so lucky.

You are so blessed Bawanna! Being able to meet someone like Yangdu and have time to just talk one to one. Thanks for sharing a great day in your life with us.
