BBO Selfbow

Very nice! Are you making the arrows?

Yes,I had a friend give me 3 dozen Port Orford Cedar shafts. They are old stock and much better than you can get nowdays.Just haven't had time to make them up yet.I have great friends.:)

I have several trad bows and have been shooting Carbon through it for a few weeks.Nothing like good wood arrows with a selfbow though.

An interesting thing I've noticed - guys who make bows, generally, don't like making arrows, and vice versa. Don't know why.

Doc (arrows for me)

I thought a self bow was one made from a single piece of wood.
So with this one being osage and bamboo...I'm confused.

I'm not sure of the strict definition. It seems to change depending on who you talk to. Maby I'm confused.

How did you attach the bamboo to the osage? Fish or sinew glue? I have the bowyers bible, parts 1 and 2, I would love to make a bow someday.

Urac-185 is the glue to use.You can get some at 3Rivers Archery.Probably lots of other places as well.Natural glues will work but are not as reliable or as waterprof.Urac-185 has a very long history of dependable service.

The bamboo was sanded on a 6x48 untill it was about 1/8" thick and the Osage was floor tillered and sanded flat as well. You think this flimsey piece of bamboo won't help any but when glued in a form which gives about 3" of reflex it ads greatly to the strength of the Osage.

The Bowyers Bibles are great but from what I remember they taught that you need a nearly perfect stave to start which is basically impossible to find. With a good heat gun you can tame nearly any twisted and humped stave into a bow.
