BBQ Grill Bottle fueled Forge problem!

lemme se if i can ge my friend to bring the thermo back over he is an ultra tech at a toyota dealer (has actual factory training) but when he came over and shot the flame i asked what one of those run and he said in the 5-600$ range but ill try and get the model for you i think it was a snapon because all of his other tools are snapon

Thanks, PJH, I'd really be ineterested. As a techie geek boy I'd consider that expenditure. :)

PJH,I'd like the number on that thermo, too. Most laser jobs are for lower temps. And, yes, they cost a lot for a good one.
As to the 3500 degrees, you may have been shooting the flame cone and not the chamber temp.I have a three burner, venturi forge and get about 2800,running at 20-25 PSI.I'd have to pull out my old books, but I don't think you will get a 3500 degree chamber temp. without a forced air mix and 25 or more PSI gas pressure.Mete, jump in here if I'm remembering wrong.

Just did a few chart checks.Inswool is only rated for 2000F,The best brick I spotted was a super refractory brick rated at 3200F,and 1075 steel melts at 2760F.Seems a 3500 F soup can forge would become molten pretty quick.
Not tryin to pick a fight, just curious about the numbers.

i am not using the weed burner as a forge i use it straight up set to about 2000 degrees with about a 10" wide flame for my heat treating (until i can get a kiln) i called him tonite and he verified that it as a snapon and they only make 2 or 3 but if he remembers tommorow he will write the model number down
he said it was the only laser thermo that they make that goes that high (aprox 4000 degrees) and neither he nor i know if they still make them it is about 2-3 years old

but i did call him and i am trying if i feel up to the drive tommorow i might go meet him at work and get the number myself (if i feel up to it cuz im still trying to kick all these torn muscles and all from the accident)

phil

p.s. and i dont really think that anyone wants me one the road driving when im loaded up on pain killers would you?

Thanks, Phil, I appreciate it. Snapon is about 20 miles from me; trucks are everywhere around here all the time. I will check their website.

And, no, please don't feel pressed to drive up there buzzed. LOL ;)

I just checked their website. Seems the highest temp they have nowadays is 1600F. Knowing they're around somewhere, though, gives me renewed interest in searching some more. Thanks a bunch, Phil!

I only know of models up to 1600 degrees. They cost about $1500.Lots of types will shoot 1000F,and all kinds of cheap(relatively) IR laser guns will max at 700F.
Phil,get that number for us.

Boy, that was kinda fun. Here's a couple pix of one of the groups I had today. The kids were pretty good, I only had to threaten one with a hammer (nobody complained). Thanks for the help with the mini-forge guys. The library appreciated something different and I think the kids really liked it. I'm sure I'll be doing something similar real soon.

Ya never know with a herd of demons like that. One may become the next neighborhood bladesmith.

Thats kewl J Looks like you had their attention :D :D :D

When I demo to kids I usually hammer out a couple of duplex nails into little swords and give em out.

That's pretty cool Sweany, I'd just started doing that myself. The kids seem to really like them.

I like em too.

Have a couple spools of colored thread handy and they can make wrapped handles for them. :D

Yep, we've got red and purple. I square up the "handles" a bit, make a couple passes on each bevel, then throw them in ferric for awhile. Then Tess wraps them and adds a couple drops of crazy glue to seal the thread all up. She refuses to make sheaths for them though.
:D
