In the firearm community a "Barbecue Gun" refers to an especially well made pistol/revolver that borders on a functional piece of art. These firearms range from ornately engraved custom pieces with gold inlays to original Colt SSA's from the 1800s wearing a rugged patina for decor. Normally these Barbecue Guns are secured in ornately carved fine leather rigs.

So in this spirit I thought we should have a thread dedicated to the "BBQ knife". Now, it's a little tough to definitively define, but there is certainly one thing it is NOT, and that's an EDC. It's also not necessarily a safe queen. This is a knife that you have pride of ownership in, but something you're willing to carry and use should the mood/need arise. This is a knife you take for special occasions, or because you "feel like it". You may enjoy showing it off for family, friends, or other knife enthusiasts (like us). Fixed blades, traditionals, and modern tacticool folders all potentially fit the bill.

So I'll start off with pics of my ZT 0600. Full disclosure: this example probably borders on the definition of a true Barbecue Knife...but I think it's about the best example I have. It certainly isn't my EDC. I enjoy owning it. I have no problem carrying it or using it. And it truly is a very well made knife. I'm sure there will be much better examples should this thread get any traction. If yours happens to be a fixed blade, be sure to include a pic of your sheath if it's part of the package.

Well those are literally barbecue knives:thumbup: all worthy of the title.:)

So if I get this right, since I am not familiar with the term...It's not an EDC, and its not a "safe queen". A knife you wouldn't carry if you were going to do some tough work. But a knife you may pocket if you were going to a social event (such as a BBQ), where it may get lightly used to cut something, but would mostly be a conversation piece or show piece. Is that correct?

You've got the idea:thumbup:

I don't get it.

Like a "special occasion" knife? Like a "gentleman's knife"? Or what is known as a "Sunday go to meetin' knife"?

I'm not at all following this one.

Below is a link on the S&W forum dedicated to BBQ guns which might provide some clarity:

I'l pass. I'd prefer an explanation from the guy who started the thread. Maybe you can summarize the content on that page for us. It's your party.

I know what youre saying JOELSM. Posted this yesterday in the ZT pic thread but it applies here too.

Definitely not a BBQ Gun though, the knife costs more than it does.:D

BBQ Gun- An old term from the Southwest that refers to a gun that is not worn daily. It won't have the scratches, wear marks, etc a daily wear gun would have. These guns were not something that were never used or "useless."

Just apply it to knives.

Ah. So a "Sunday go to meetin' knife."

Now that's the idea:thumbup: Sweet blade.

If I'm understanding correctly... I guess this would be mine? A left-hand Mnandi with Honduran Rosewood inlays from CRK.

I don't carry it much, mainly just to church on Sundays or social events where I'm in slacks and want something lighter or my PM2 or BM 710 feel like too much. It does see a bit of use every so often, usually just trimming loose threads, occasionally opening letters or packages or cutting up a bit of food.

I wasn't really sold on it when I first got it and was actually trying to get rid of it, but I've since realized it kind of fills a niche for me when I need something that's classy enough to distract from the fact that it's a knife at these sorts of events. A BM 707 in blue alu/cf and a Caly3.5 CF/ZDP-189 do alright but I'm reaching for this one more and more now.

I think it's pretty clear the way ericvar101 explains it. Most of my knives end up being "BBQ" knives because non of my friends are really into knives so they are always amused and interested to see any knife I'm using anytime the need arises.

I think a one of mine would be the DCL Custom pocket fixed blade. It's got a unique handle material that no one I personally know has ever seen, and it was made by a 16 year old kid/guy which surprises everyone I tell since it's so well done. It may not fit the BBQ knife bill perfectly since I do EDC it every now and then.

I'm out of town and this is the only picture I have of it at the moment.
