That's a shame, he only did what he needed to do in order to survive. I imagine the 'tree-huggers' are probably upset about the cubs being put down. I can understand that.

Its an unfortunate turn of events, but you can't blame the guy for defending himself.
 
We are overrun by black bear in northwestern ontario, and they appear out of nowhere at times. When walking down the trails I clap my hands and make noise to let them know rather than startling the bears.

The second thing I do is always carry a fixed blade. A good fixed blade can be used two ways, as a knife against the bear, or for making a good clubing stick in a pinch. Effective defence in a country with excessive guncontrol schemes.
