I don't understand what the reason is for only 200 being made.
I don't have any connection with Buck or BCCI, but I've worked in similar industries, so I'll take a WAG at this one...
1. Buck doesn't make *all* their line *all* the time...They would produce different models at different times of the year...in bulk...Set up their line for a certain number of knives of one model, and shoot them through...So the order from BCCI would be filled when the 110 rotation comes around again...
2. BCCI is not a rich organization. They're a club, with limited resources. Buck has some number in mind for special orders (like from Cabelas, SMKW, BCCI, etc) and [I'm guessing] wants some form of guarantee that the order will be paid for. Based on past experience, BCCI probably has 200 set as the average number of knives that they know will be purchased by members. I seem to recall a thread here with Larry saying they had a few knives leftover from the last BCCI collectors offering. When BCCI gets those checks/money orders for 200, the order will go in to Buck (or perhaps there is a level of confidence that the run will sell out, and the $$$ is taken from the BCCI coffers). We've already seen a pre-production pic of one of them, so Buck has an idea of what raw supplies they need to order/set aside for the BCCI run, so they can purchase the Sambar/Nickel Silver, etc.
My concern is that BCCI may be predicting this particular offering based on past BCCI knife offerings; that is to members who collect BCCI knives regardless of what model it is, rather than on the percentage of the more popular Buck models, like the 110 or 112, which are attracting attention and new memberships to BCCI just because it is a different 110. Still, you have to set a ceiling, and if Larry's PO box is overflowing by the end of this coming week, maybe BCCI can increase the order number.
Or, my own personal hope, convince Buck [with $$$ numbers] that a drop-point 110 (whether from Custom Shoppe or regular production line) is a viable option for limited production. I'd pay extra to get a drop-point or even a saber-point blade. I have approximately 12 Buck 110's/112's here, and I don't even consider myself a collector.
I'm hoping CJ, Chuck, and Joe are all paying attention to the threads here about people running out to Wal-Mart/K-Mart/Academy, Cabelas, and SMKW, and buying 110's even though they already have more than enough...
...My $.02...
