BCS BATAC LE'S Question

I'm not sure that Lil' foo is correct about the geometry. Looking at my LE and my CG, the edge bevel is both less tall and more acute on the CG than the LE. Maybe it is just mine. (a sample pool of one of each is insufficient to draw conclusions) My impression of the two is that while the LE is the first knife that gave me a crocodile dundee moment (This is a knife), the CG looks like the better cutter. The CG came today so no actual real world experience. If you haven't heard it before, get both. You'll hear that again, I'm sure.

To me, the difference in handle size is indistinguishible between the LE and the black-tan G10, but I can't remember if the G10 is standard or mag.

I'm strongly contemplating stripping and satin finishing my CG BATAC (Pork-fried-rice badger).

Take two flat, straight lenghts and place one on each side of the saber grind bevel...

Measure the gap at the spine w/ some calipers... I get .270"

But I do only have one CG to compare with.

I just measured the thickest part of the handles on both the CG w/magnum, and the LE. The LE measured out at .855, while the CG came in at .825. Not much difference, but I think the weight of the LE adds to "feeling" of thicker handles.

I'll have to try that in a few when I get a chance.

Looking at the choil area, at least on my CG and LE, the blade on the LE just before the edge bevel is approximately 2x thickness of the same area on the CG. While the spine may very well be the same width if they were both flat ground, the edge is considerably thinner on the CG. Again, this is a sample of one (each), but in this case, the CG should be the better slicer.

They're both keepers, and both hair popping sharp from the shop or store, but they are different. I don't think that you can go wrong with either, and that is why I say GET BOTH. Then, sell the one that you like less.

The slabs on the pork fried rice are mags so that explains why I notice little if any difference between the two.

The G10 is sharper than the micarta, and feels more "rock solid" than the micarta, but the micarta has a more warm and organic feel. Both are considered nearly indistructible adn I can't decide which I like better. The pattern shows better in the G10.

I have been pining away for a batac, but I have to have magnum micarta scales. I see now that the BCS has the LE'S with the mag tigerhide, and I started to go ahead and get one then I noticed that the steel is .270" thick. Can one of yo guys that owns and uses one of these comment on the thickness? I want one for a hiking general knife, and I think this might be too darned thick (heavy) for anything other than a safe queen. I hope I am wrong. Could somebody post a pic with the new le .270 next to a std with mag handles .187 ???? thanks,

Going back to your original question, I have big hands but still find the BATAC too thick and heavy for an all purpose hiking knife. Depending on the type of hiking I am doing (short trip or multiple day) I normally carry either a Swamprat Ratmandu ,Busse Game Warden or Fallkniven product. Though the BATAC is a great looking knife I find it too large and heavy for slicing and general purpose bushcraft and too small for a chopper.

Thanks for all the replies. My current general purpose hiking fixed blade favorite is the ratmandu followed closely by the fallkniven s1, brkt aurora, brkt Bravo 1, fallkniven a1, and the list goes on and on and on and on lmao. I need another knife like I need a hole in my head, but ever since I got an active duty, I have decided I need another busse. To be honest, what I would really like is an olive drab or dark green blade with magnum black micarta scales in the CG. I think micarta is the best way to go for handle slabs, and I think the cg blade thickness is where it's at for a general purpose knife. Second choice would be a muddy/tan mag micarta, but at this point, I am willing to take anything in the cg with magnum micarta slabs that shows up at bcs, or that I don't have to pay a premium for on the exchange.
