Open candy and food packages, or do you try and struggle with the built-in perforations or use your teeth or something?

I always find myself trying to open it with the packaging at first. Sometimes it succeeds and opens it in a messed up way and I think, "I should have just used my knife in the first place."

If it's something new I give it a chance. If I've been burned before I go straight for the knife.

It depends. Really, it's mostly applicable to re-sealable packages (like some with the zip-lock lining, or the ones with the wire tabs that fold over). If it's perforated well, I'll just tear along the perforations. Otherwise I generally use a knife or scissors, as tearing the top seems to frequently mess up the re-sealing liners.

I just grab a knife, I have never had any luck with the perforations or the resealable crap. I'll just cut it open and if it needs sealed when I'm done I'll put it in a Ziploc bag.

my cv peanut or toothpick opens coffee sachets. one thing though, is instant coffee corrosive? my case cv knives develop a dark patina from all those coffee breaks.

I thought peanuts were carbon steel blades...which would naturally get a patina over time.

They make peanuts in both cv and their tru sharp stainless, I greatly prefer cv, it is very easy to put a shaving sharp edge on them, and I love a nice patina as well.

I can not think of any kind of food that i would need a knife to unpack
Ooooh, maybe peanut sacks, of plastic
but it is smarter to not cut it into two pieces so you do not need to throw it away twice

I look for any and every opportunity to use my knife, provided it is in a way that won't damage or abuse it.

+1 to this

--those entenmanns brownies/ or muffins in those thick white plastic bags are pretty tough ha. i got tired of catapulting brownies across the room when i open the bag

I will pull my knife out and use it for any reason I can. Plus, those perforations aren't worth a damn 90% of the time.

yeah they do but i'm talking about a really fast rust build-up right where it sliced that coffee sachet (the shape of the 'slash' is even clearly drawn.) that is, when i neglect to oil or wipe it down for even just one day.

I use my knife for this and a lot of other things.
While I could use my hands, using the knife is just more fun, and quicker too.

It depends on the package. Some packages are closed with zip-lock, or are made of materials that are easy to tear open. In those cases, I don't use a knife. In other cases...when I think of it. Sometimes I need some time of struggling with the plastic before this giant lightbulb appears "Oh yeah I've got this knife in my pocket, as.. always. Sigh"

I've had a couple greasy finger situations where my knife has saved me. Generally, I use it for the tough stuff.
