Beach and knives

Titanium MPU would be perfect for the beach. No worry about rust, no folding mechanism to foul and 40% lighter in weight than a steel knife of the same size.

Bottom one here:

I have to concur since I just bought the middle blade in the picture to use as my tackle bag/ bait knife, no need to clean or rinse!

Thank you all so much for your answers, you gave me some very good knives to choose from!
One question, how is titanium in edge retention? I get the feeling that it migt not be very good at it for we don't see many makers using it even though it has the decorative and weight proprieties it has.

I don't think titanium makes for great blade steel. If you want rust free, H1 is the best show in town for now.

You're right on the money with the spyderco salt series. It's my go-to beach knife.

I've carried an Izula at the beach for years but just recently picked up a Dragonfly Salt I want to try out. The Izula has never rusted, even after constant dunks in the ocean, washed off after cutting bait, crabs, etc. No issues as long as I don't neglect it.

Beta Ti would surprise you, check out , Mission mpk, find the torture tests online, this isn't your grandmothers typical Ti alloy.....it is formulated/alloyed to yield properties needed for hard use blades....edge retention with the best of edge retention steels, no, but can hold its own when compared to knife steels on the lower end of edge retention, yes..

I remember taking my Kershaw Blur to the beach, had it clipped to my trunks pocket as I swam and waded in the water. After leaving, I realized the knife was clogged with sand even though it had been in my pocket the whole time! While rust was not an issue, I had wash it out under the hose to clean it out since I had no tools with me to dissemble. I was worried about the torsion bar area but thankfully there were no issues and the flow through design made it easy to hose out.

Hey,
Its just that I feel naked knowing I don't have a knife at hand if I need one.
Do you carry knives in the beach? If yes, which model?

Lol yes, & yes ;) - I always feel naked without a knife, so it's understandable.

It's natural for someone to be more inclined to purchase a Spydie salt model or a BM H20 model, if you are worried about rust, I'd check out the H20 Grip..

I usually just carry of BM 530/940 to the beach, Cali's coast is too cold for swimming, so hiking on the beach won't cause any serious rust problem.

Hey,
I recently decided that I should get a knife to carry with me in my shorts when I go to the beach. I was thinking in one of the spyderco salt models, likely the dragonfly.
My question is, am I being rational? Do I really need a knife in the beach? Its just that I feel naked knowing I don't have a knife at hand if I need one.

Thanks in advance.

I bring a Spyderco Pacific Salt all the time. It mostly cuts food, but I always think that one day I'm doing to cut loose a sea turtle tangled in fishing line. Never actually seen a seat turtle, but some day...

:cool:I had an experience with knives at the beach just today (July 4th). While not SCUBA diving or fishing, I wanted to have a small knife for possible emergency use. I attached a small stainless steel folder to a belt loop, then put the knife in my pocket where it would be accessible but not visible. My mistake.

After rolling around in the surf, the joint and lock of the folder were clogged with sand. After I rinsed the knife with fresh water and opened it again, the folder would not close. I was only able to close the knife again, with difficulty, after cleaning all joints and cracks with a toothpick.

Those who suggested a small stainless or titanium neck knife are probably correct. The neck knife can be attached to a belt or belt loop with a lanyard, then hidden in a pocket. The fixed blade knife can be easily rinsed off, with no grit or sand causing problems.
