Bear and Sons

skyline, tenacious, buck vantage pro, vantage avid, vantage select paperstone, vantage select small, kershaw needs work, buck 110,buck 119,buck nighthawk, buck oddisy, Kabar USMC,and a lot of case knives.but i guess your right, what do I know about knives....I will admit that it is not as good as some of my Case blades or the Vantage Pro and Avid, but it was 1/2 the price. To be quite honest, I am offended that because my opinion differs from yours (probly because you cant appreciate a blade for what it is, you see it as "tacticool") Or possibly you are Chinese and do not appreciate American things. I honestly do not know and do not care.

I bought 3 Bear knives about 3 years ago. One came sharpened on 1 edge, one came with way too much vertical blade play, and I don't remember the details of the third.

I talked to the owners of Bear & Son one the phone after writing him a letter. Bear made a knife for me....it was a liner lock and Still had issues:grumpy:.
I don't call this bad luck. I call it very little if Any quality among other problems.

You Couldn't Give Me A Bear Knife!!!

My first Bear was a Damascus and mop peanut that I got on the bay for ~$24 I believe. Solid little folder, I would wear it for luck in university exams. Not a peanut guy so doesn't get much pocket time now. With my good first experience I bought a fb stag handled skinner when in the arctic (inflated price but no new knives for 4 months drove me crazy). On the first time out the left handle scale fell off. Looking at it I noticed almost no adhesive (on an unpinned handle). Called for the RGA, sent it back. 4!!! Months after hearing nothing I called in to find what was going on. They had no clue, and after 15 minutes they said they would look into it and call me back. An hour or so later they called and said that they found the knife and would begin reparing it soon. When I asked why it hadn't been fixed they gave me no answer, but said they would call me back when it was done. Another month later I call and they say it's almost done. At this point they tell me it's almost done- WTF!! gluing doesn't take a month to finish and it was a single scale. I mention my disgust and ask that it is returned. A couple of weeks later UPS drives up and charges me their $30+ fee for getting it across the border, despite the fact I requested and was told it would ship USPS. Looking at the knife I saw they "touched up" the edge, dulling it and basically destroying any evenness to the grinds. The new scale was much larger than the opposite side in thickness, and did not match at all IMO. I traded it a while ago on here and the new owner seemed pleased, but with the money I lost, poor communication and even worse repairs I will always steer people away.

Right well first off being an asian american im gunna ignore your comment about being chinese. Hell i was born and raised in texas of which 8yrs in inner city dallas (white trash heaven) and i must say even those inbred SOB's had more class then how your acting.

the reason i asked for pics was so i could see or at least have you describe the problems you had with each knife. This way I would be able to see it from your point of view as most of us on these forums will agree the big 3 arent the biggest knife companies around for nothing. Compared to Bear and Sons who have had a pretty spotty rep even in the best of times. Now i must say that you appear to have a decent collection of knives alot of which have earned a name for themselves. I also believe the term "best bang for you buck" is what your looking for instead of "better than" were this used instead it would be more understandable.

but of course what do i know im just a japanese communist mall ninja

P.S. its spelled Odyssey

i kinda like bears and sons butterfly knives, the cheaper ones, not the 70 buck ones. i don't see the value in those, ymmv though. they are dirt cheap and not all that bad for the money, imho. i am not good flipping and such and i drop them on occasion and dropping a 250+ dollar butterfly i can't deal with, so i like these bear and sons ones so when it breaks when i drop it more than few times, i'm not out big money.

i'm not a fan of their folders though, i find it hit and miss across the products. some bring some value to the table compared to the competition, but the majority do not, imo.

Bear & Sons knives are right on par with an old company called Parker. ;) Even in their magazine ads their knives look ... cheap.

I'm gonna ignore your ignorant comment that all Asians are Chinese. As you said that you were Japanese, and, last time I checked, Japan is completly different from China.....But on a happier note thank you for your comment and I apoligize if my comment sounded ignorant...I was just saying that, generally, people like to buy products from thier home country.Americans like American things, Mexicans like Mexican things, and yes, Chinese like Chinese things. Obviously there are exeptions but I think that as a general rule, people like to support thier own countries!

Well, seeing this thread went from the quality, or lack thereof of Bear & Son knives, and turned into a political thread, I'd say this would be a fine time to lock it...just sayin' :D

ibtm

on the subject, I have seen to many negative reviews to ever buy one. I don't have the time or money to put up with hit or miss QC. When i have options like the low cost kershaws, byrds, spyderco tenacious/persistence/ect, and others of this class, then i really have no reason to go for something hit or miss.

Now, on to the weird stuff. "maybe you are chinese and do not appreciate american things"? "americans like american things, chinese like chinese things....." where did that come from? I am a full fledged american, and i have no problem with computer parts made elsewhere, knives made elsewhere, or anything else made elsewhere as long as it is comparable quality. I may be a new generation, but i could not care less. if the same product is made in america and china for the same price, then i will go for the american version. however, that is, in no way the deciding factor in my descision making.

The only bear knife I purchased was a commemerative BSA centenial knife that i bought at the jamboree in 2010. I was not impressed with the quality but that is not why i purchased it. If you like your knife more power to you, and i dont doubt you got one that works and has quality by your standards, but bear knives are not for me.

I had one Bear and Sons lockback. It would not lock until a little file work was done. Gave it away and I stay away from Bear and Sons knives.
