Bear Attack

Man when I saw that on the news it just sickend me,I dont want to sound out of line but why did this mother leave without grabbing her baby,There is NO way I would leave my kid for not even a second if that was going on.I dont know I wasnt there so I am speaking out of anger and it just makes me sick.

Wilderness & Survival topics generally focus on first-person perspectives. "Survival", whatever the type, always concerns not only myself, but others around me. Be it my hunting party, hiking group, or my family.

I shake my head at these things, and I understand your sentiments. I both feel sorry for the woman and want to bust her upside the head with a blunt object. Much like the man who went elk hunting and took his toddler along with him. He left his child sleeping in the truck and headed into the brush. His son woke up, got out, and went looking for him. The man returned to find his son missing and called out the search parties. The boy did not survive. I heard that story and wanted to cry and beat that man senseless at the same time.

The aforementioned people might have had their survival instincts working okay, but they did not use them to encompass the people around them.

:( It just shows you, always be aware of your surroundings keep your kids close. 3 weeks ago in my neighborhood we had a red fox jumped into an above ground pool and bit a small girl in the face, we got there in minutes we held the fox at bay til the police got there and shot it. The sad part was it was rabid and the girl is getting the shots:( So its hard to say what to do , I guess the world is changing ... thanx for the link I found it interesting.. CHOW!!

well the other half of the story is that the woman had three children a 4 and 2 year old and the 5 month old, she took the two children into the house first and came out and found the baby missing off of the porch. apparentyly there were eye witnesses , what were they thinking, they saw the bear pick the baby out of the stroller. so who could have intervened. dont be so hard on the mother only.

There is often information that is not reported by the press, so in cases like this, I don't like to judge the people involved too harshly. In this case one report said the father tried to stop the bear and was knocked to the ground. I am sure everything happened very quickly and everyone did the best that they were able. The people did succeed in getting the bear to drop the baby.
If someone had a firearm handy, things may have turned out differently, but who knows? I think the real cause of the attack was that the bear was feeding on garbage and lost his fear of people.

This drought that is gripping most of the nation is probably partly to blame. My friend in Colorado Springs says the drought conditions are providing very little food for wildlife, and the starving bears are venturing into town much more than normal desperate to find a meal.

It's a sad situation all around, for the mother, child, and the bear.

Just knowing that if either parents or any bystander had the right tools, all this could've ended a lot faster and there's a chance the child can be saved makes me very angry.

The story doesn't give enough details to tell exactly what happened. But how would you stop a bear? If it's going for a kid you have to do something, but I've never heard that punching and kicking bears is horribly effective. And would you shoot at a bear that's got a kid in it's mouth? That'd be a very tough call. While the whole situation sucks, sometimes sh!t just happens and you can't be prepared for everything at all times. If a bear just showed up and started munching people I'd probably be so stunned I wouldn't know what to do.

I know one thing, I can't imagine what that mother is feeling right now. Only she knows what she could have done differently to try and save her baby and that's something she has to live with for the rest of her life.
