Wilderness & Survival topics generally focus on first-person perspectives. "Survival", whatever the type, always concerns not only myself, but others around me. Be it my hunting party, hiking group, or my family.
I shake my head at these things, and I understand your sentiments. I both feel sorry for the woman and want to bust her upside the head with a blunt object. Much like the man who went elk hunting and took his toddler along with him. He left his child sleeping in the truck and headed into the brush. His son woke up, got out, and went looking for him. The man returned to find his son missing and called out the search parties. The boy did not survive. I heard that story and wanted to cry and beat that man senseless at the same time.
The aforementioned people might have had their survival instincts working okay, but they did not use them to encompass the people around them.
