Bear Drags Sleeping Teen From Hammock on Campsite

What black bears:confused: I have never seen a black bear in the woods around where I live and I don't even make all that much noise in the woods.
Just a matter of being in the right place at the right time. I saw a sow and two cubs Monday evening while fishing the Jackson River. I haven't read any reports for Virginia but it does seem to me that the black bear population is higher than what it was in past years.

I agree. Much like rattlesnakes it's just the luck of the draw in some areas. Maybe it's me but it seems like many critters are on the increase.

I think wildlife is changing. More animals are being born and raised near people. They get used to people as being harmless and a good source of food. Deer are a good example.. They're not in the least worried about cars or people. They grow up with them. Black bears on Vancouver Island wander around town like loose dogs. Had them in my garage a few times. Normal to tell the kids to be watchful in the morning going to school.. The bears not far away. Give them room

Bear burrito was the old name for a camping hammock, but it USED to be a joke. This is the first time I've heard of it actually happening:eek: It seems like wildlife is fighting back nowadays. Between the bear, mountain lions, dog packs, and sharks, you hardly safe outside of your living room.

Too many people, and shrinking wildlife habitat I suppose.

T Linton asks the right questions ! There was a case where a bear dragged a kid from a tent . He had . against the rules , taken a bag of chips into the tent !!! Bears have a very good sense of smell .

This will continue without a doubt. If we are careful and follow the rules (like don't feed bears because you think wildlife is like a Disney movie), then it may be limited to the occasional odd-ball animal who just does it for some unexplained reason. Critters are definitely getting more used to people and I think encroachment is mainly to blame. Though I have no clue what's happening with all the shark attacks in recent years. They used to be so rare and now it's every year.

I was a Police Officer in Roanoke, and we had several bear calls in the city. Last I remember was close to Williamson and Orange AVE.

Human interaction between wildlife has been going on for long enough for animals to make the connection that humans are both tasty, and that we pose a threat to their habitat and existence. If wildlife ever decides to work together and seek revenge, then humans will be in trouble.

My son and I were backpacking in a popular area 2 weekends ago and someone not with us hung a bear bag upwind from us, I said something they countered they were far enough away, rather than argue we ended up just moving our hammocks. last thing I want is a bear wandering through us to get to the food

From what I have seen common sense can be very uncommon among campers. We had a family reunion at the local lake a few years back that many of us turned it into a weekend camping trip. There were signs posted advising people to keep food stored properly because of the bear population. I got up early and took the dog for a walk. I could not believe the amount of food I saw just laying around the campsites. I'm surprised the smells didn't bring in bear from adjacent counties.
