I have heard this floating around and youtube 'confirms' it. Does anyone have anything on this? I am quite disappointed if it turns out that he is really pulling the legs of millions, maybe dozens, of viewers.

Use this link to do a search.

Yes he is full of it. He's just an actor following a script.

LOOOOOOSER!!!! Survivor man all the way!!!

meh, he *is* ex artists rifle who are pretty hardcore and he is an accredited climber so I give him respect for that.

That being said I just view his show as entertainment (What will he eat this time?!1 :D ) and not as a serious documentory on survival- although the recent Siberian episodes are very interesting.

Quickly checked the wikipedia entry on him and he was;

"Specialist Combat Survival Instructor and Patrol Medic" in the SAS (Artists Rifle REG.) which makes you wonder how much control he has over the show?

The producers obviously want to make it interesting by making him do stupid things, "I am on a cliff over rapids so I totally should jump off it RIGHT NOW otherwise a bear will eat me" which provides great footage.

I know it's not real, but I enjoy it anyway.
I know that I won't find a perfect, warm deer carcass in Siberia left by a friendly hunter. I know that I won't be naked when I accidently fall into icy water. I know that I wouldn't risk a monitor lizards highly infectious bite just because I want to eat it's tail. I know that the pile of wood next to his fire is never nearly high enough to keep the fire going through the night. I know that climbing down waterfalls is the opposite of "survival".
To me it's just an adventure show for entertainment. But I wouldn't want to miss it.
It's possible to watch MvW AND Survivorman. But if I was searching for a serious survival instructor and only these two guys were available, I'd choose Les Stroud.

It's fun to watch as long as you know better. My issue is that we're in the age of armchair-everything. Kids get busted up all the time doing WWF stuff in the backyard...

There's some other stuff that's mildly amusing to research if you're interested - start with his father Sir Michael Grylls, and one of his loudest supporters Ranulph Fiennes. That's as far as I got until I decided the guy was chock full of something stinky and didn't pursue it any further.

IMHO, it's tv fluff that doesn't really fit with the intent or spirit of this board any more than a sitcom or talk show does. Or maybe it's just me...

BTW, if you type "site:bladeforums.com" into google as one of your search terms, it'll search the boards here.
