Ok, I know how we feel about him and the show and the hype and silly things that surround him.

BUT

Let's admit it.

The last few episodes I saw had lots of good knife use shots and he was really proving a great point with only using that small knife. It looks like a JK Knife with the clip point. Additionally, I like the horizontal carry on his belt too. Reminds me of a Koyote Knives sheath.

Hate his knife but I can see us knife nuts liking all the knife work.

Let's admit that at least.

I like the new format of the show where he actually shows the crew and even helps them out on occasion. He also shows relatively responsible use of his knife, so you have to give him that. I still find the show entertaining and will continue to watch it, but I sure as hell won't follow most of his advice. :)

I don't care for the show...knife use is what this thread is about. It might turn into a heated debate if I don't say that.

i don't have cable... so i have only caught a few episodes here and there...:o but these new ones sound pretty cool.. huh..

Ya mike he is doing more bushcraft with his knife than anything it seems, that's all I 'm saying.

I've always liked and made sheaths that could be rigged horizontal on the belt like that, and I like that way of carrying a knife. The only thing about that one is it orients the blade edge towards the user. In a rough situation I think that could be a mistake. I dont understand why its flipped, it doesnt make for a natural draw either. If the blade was flipped it would go into the hand in the proper grip while keeping the blade edge oriented away from his belly.. Its a small thing to gripe about I guess, it just seems like a bad idea with no reason for being that way IMHO..

I agree Ruben. His knife usage has been good lately. I enjoy the bushcrafty tasks he does in the show.

I haven't seen the recent shows but if he's popularizing the use of a knife for wilderness and survival tasks, that's just fantastic

Yeah, his knife useage has gone up lately, but I do miss his very first few episodes where all he used was his knife, water bottle, and his flint. Those episodes were awsome, and before he was found at the holiday inn.

the show is a tad different and I like the new format and more actually using of a knife is great, Horn Dog has the BG knife and it is expensive but he gave it a great overall review !

And I thought paying $350 US for some of my Busses was a bit much.

These prices aren't comparable. This knife costs 440€ for me. For europeans, that's about the price range as many of the popular american made knives. For americans, it looks differently and you have to pay more than the knife is worth in comparison to what the american market has to offer.

I don't like the serrations of the newer version, but I do like the shape of this knife and the way Bear uses it. BTW, I haven't seen him doing stuff with his knife that my Mora 711 couldn't handle. It's rubber grip would have performed better in Siberia than his full tang knife. So you won't ever see me buying his knife. At that price, I wouldn't even consider it as a "user".
I don't know why he didn't just get a Fällkniven F1, but on the other hand, I like that he has his own style and that he insists on using a british knife and wristwatch.
That, and the hilariously staged situation in his show are the main reason why I keep watching it. To me, it's one of the most entertaining shows today.

Besides, I never heard him say "Buy my knife if you want to survive!". You don't have to imitate every survival instructor. Buy what works for YOU. If you wan't to imitate Bear, well, go ahead and pay the price. ;)

That Bayley 'Bear' knife will run over $700 U$D by the time it gets here. A new this year skinner from Buck, #005GYS ~$45-$50 mail order, comes with a horizontal carry nylon sheath. Mine has been a fun woods-stomping/sheeple-friendly knife, even if it is a bit lighter than the Bayley knife. The upgrade 154CM/rosewood/brass version, 005RWS ~$70-$75 mail order, comes with a vertical leather sheath.

Bear Grylls is entertaining. Like him, I can be found near railroad tracks... civilization!

Stainz

Stomper makes a knife that looks like the original model with a better handle for 20% of the price. Buy American. Buy "Blade Bros".

Is it just me, or does it say that the blade is heat treated to be stain resistant? I'm no metalurgist, but I thought stain resistance was dictated by the makeup of the steel, and not how it was hardened.

Well, it's made out of RWL powdered steel, most likely RWL 34. Google it, the manufacturer has an excellent PDF for that steel, including different HT methods (including one for greater stain resistance - as far as I remember). I've made two knifes out of RWL 34 and I like it a lot.

Anyhow back to the subjest of knife usage on the tv show. I think we need a different Bear doing knife stuff on the tube, Ruben get a TV show, your articles are awesome man:thumbup:.

Bear's favorite blade?

Butter knife: best to spread marmelade on his toasts when staying at his hotel.
