Hello! I'm new to this forum but a long time outdoor enthusiast, so I've got a few survival knives and really appreciate the topic.

Yesterday I bought two Bear Grylls Gerber knives at a local store. The scout, and the compact scout ones. The problem is I'm having second thoughts concerning their authenticity, and I was hoping you could help me out.

Here are pics of the knives I bought:

Though they seem and feel authentic, I've spotted some differences with the ones displayed in the Gerber website:

Some little details seem to differ, as well as the font type in the first one. Also, it seems that the original ones come in a blister pack, not in a box, but there could be another explanation to that... Maybe now they come in a box, or it depends where they were manufactured, etc.

I hope you can help me with this! If they're replicas I'll return them, but I'm hoping they're not, cause they really look and feel great, but I want to make sure they're reliable.

Thanks!

I don't know the first thing about Gerbers, but I've seen those on a Chinese dealers website. As I said, I don't know Gerbers, but I know for a fact that the dealer has a whole line of counterfeit Bucks.

Yep, just check the infamous chinese knockoff wholesale site that everyone and his brother knows about and both of these appear there.
It would indeed appear that these are counterfiet knives.

The prices on them could be a tip off themselves. If you check, even the Mart sells them for a lot more than that.

Those prices are not in US dollars, they're chilean pesos (I'm from Chile).

In dollars they'd be about 20 and 14 dollars respectably. But yes, it's still suspiciously cheap.

Either way, fakes or not, return them and get yourself some good knives. Gerber has gone WAY down hill in the past couple decades and most of the Bear Grylls stuff is absolute crap (even the authentic ones).

Yup. Looks counterfeit. Gerber's stuff usually comes in clam shell packaging. On the bright side, there's a chance that they're better than the real thing.

Thanks a lot for your feedback! Keep it coming :P

I haven't spotted any spelling mistakes on the packaging or the survival manual.

It could be that the production has gotten cheaper since they first released them (hence the difference from the pictures on the website), which happens a lot. But there's a big chance that they're just fake too.

I sent an email to Gerber with the pictures. I hope they reply soon, because I need to know if I'm going to return them or not.

Anyway, I do believe they're counterfeit now. Everything points towards them being really good fakes.

Thanks again!

Sitting here looking at my large Scout and the thumbstud on yours is definitely different than mine.

1. I can't believe that the Chinese would copy the Chinese
2. I don't want to be a downer but Gerber does not have a reputation for quality any more.
3. If you are going to buy an inexpensive knife from China at least look at spyderco or kershaw.

It is not a copy. There are 2 ways of selling this merch and one is a blister pack and the other is the box. Chinese are not known for quality control and have been known to change stuff a little when manufacturing. "Oh, we are out of those screws...well just use these and get them out the door." This is typical for them. They just don't care.

To sum it up, it isn't a copy, it is typical of the work being done. And, it can be packaged 2 different ways.

They are copies. Many companies have their packaging made in china to save on production costs. These same vendors are well known to sell their overrun packaging to counterfiet makers to package their wares in. You just can't really tell by that anymore. The chinese are always changing their product to more conform to the real thing so that they can sell more and their quality control has vastly improved in recent years to produce these counterfiets in order to divert sales to them, thereby subverting our economy.

As mentioned there are known counterfeit copies exist, though there are 2 genuine versions of the packaging - clamshell for big box stores usually, and boxes for general retail.

The price is your guide... if its suspiciously cheap then probably is a fake.
