Bear Grylls Gerber Scout and Compact Scout

Pretty bad then;)

I just find it too bad; I liked the company and Gerber stood for quality blades for a long time in my book and I guess, its just sentimental to believe, that things like that cant and wont change.

Gerber sure changed for the worse.

Hi bladeforum, my first post here - I bought one of the boxed BG folding scout knives a couple of days ago, and did wonder about it's authenticity as well given that it differed from the scout knife pictured on gerbergear.com.

My blade looks identical to the one S-Hoch has.

A little googling found a review of the scout knife, done by kevbarrass on britishblades.com - his version came in the plastic clamshell packaging (purchased from a reputable UK retailer), but aside from that it is every bit identical to the one I purchased boxed. kevbarrass has loads of detailed close ups in his review.

I would therefore agree with chiral.grolim's post on page 2, that the stock photos of knives are typically pre-production renditions of the final product. For example, images of the 1/2 seratted BG ultimate knife on gerbergear.com show the early version of the knife, which had the problematic pommel. The revised/current version has a much thicker pommel pastic "buffer".

Now, thinking about the boxed vs clamshell versions of the scout knife - do boxed versions exist? Yes, they do. Are boxed versions supposed to be available outside of Walmart? No. Can Walmart or Gerber explicitly control the movement of boxed versions? No. It it possible that boxed versions meant for Walmart wind of for sale elsewhere? A very high probability "yes".

Just my 2 cents, and hopefully it can put some minds at ease. Thanks for reading!

I agree that Gerber was once a great knife company. Today unless is says made in Portland Oregon on the blade:thumbup:, I do not buy the cheap China Gerbers.

Look at this brave soul, posting about Gerber AND Bear Grylls here in one fell swoop...

But seriously, those are definitely fake. And as (strictly) entertaining Bear's show is, his branded products are pretty overpriced. You can get much better versions of his products at lower prices with better quality from almost anywhere else.

I received the first "Ultimate Survival Knife" from the online retailer that sounds like a rainforest, then saw the packaging for the same knife at the store known by three letters, and did the same thing at the chalet place that sells sports stuff...all three packages were different. I liked the BG show for entertainment value, but the products are garbage.

^ + 1 if for no other reason than the lame design it is the same blade design on I believe three different Gerber knives.

Unfortunately 100% correct and thats a GIANT :( Used to be(in the 80's) my favorite company.

And no im not kidding when I say the guy that said that Even if its a knock off it may actually STILL BE JUST AS GOOD OR BETTER than a Authentic Gerber is also spot on.
