Bear Grylls Gerber Survival Ultimate Knife - bargain or not?

Why do people feel a "trunk knife" can suck? To me a knife in the trunk would only be used in a last resort situation, that's when I need quality and not a china crap gerber made grillis knife... Maybe I am wrong???

i think of a "trunk knife" as a knife i keep in my tool box that will occasionally see hard use/abuse. if i snap the tip off, damage the edge or even lose the knife i wouldn't care too much and i'll just fix it or get another one.

i use a stainless mora companion as my trunk knife.

Gimmick knife... buy a condor. Use it till your arm falls off. Avoid the hype

if you want a knife that is used on TV, go rent the first season of "The Walking Dead" then buy the Busse Team Gemini that Darrel carries.

Well, it appears I am steering away from the pack a little.

I would say that you made a good purchase with the knife. I bought one (partially serrated) just about a year ago. I have used it like crazy as a camp knife. I have started dozens of fires using the fire steel. It has held up to all the batonning I have done with it, which at times I was thumping hard on that blade. To me the sharpening stone is pretty worthless (could be my skills). The only downside with mine was it came butter knife dull. After sharpening it on the sharpmaker starting with the diamond stones I love the blade. I find the grip and handle very comfortable even when batonning.

Would I call it the "ultimate knife"? NO, but I would have to say it is a descent purchase. Just my .02 though.

My advice would be to put it through its paces and let us know what you find.

.. I said "on the whole" Gerber knives are a "pretty good value for the money" meaning, yes, there are better knives (far better knives if you want to pay for them) but in general if you don't want to spend a lot on a knife, you can get a decent user from gerber and not spend too much money. when i didn't know any better and had less money to waste, i bought quite a few gerbers and have never had any real complaints... for the price i paid.
IMVHO since we are talking about a survival knife then one should value the knife according to it's proven performance as the supporting tool for the survival!
The actual price which one has to pay for the failed knife might be his own life!
And money is of no value at the time when our survival might be dependent on a good performed knife, kindly CMIIAW!

I guess I should have known the mention of Bear and / or Gerber would bring some fairly strong replies. This was really an impulse buy but also a purchase driven by curiosity over rather strong comments that I have read regarding Gerber fixed blades in the prodigy / Lmf line or style. I have quite a few other knives that I rely on as primary knives (including BHK Woodsman Pro, Beckers (2 BK2s, a BK16, 2 BK 11s, a BK 14), Kabar MK1, Condors (Hudson Bay, Kumunga, Bushlore), Queen d2 fixed blades, several Buck fixed blades, quite a few Green River blades to which I have added handle scales, several Grohmann knives and R Murphy "Canadian" belt knives, and more Moras and machetes than I can list). The "Bear" knife was just to find out what the Gerber is all about and what it might be able to handle. I'll give some feedback as it gets some use.

Dammit.....I was going to buy a few and spray paint them with a "desert Camo" theme and sell them for $75.00 on the Bay as the much rarer BG "Escape to the Legion" tactical fixed blade.
