Bear Grylls Knock off Knife

The "内江, 四川省" text makes me think I should not buy one...I'll stick with the Martin knives, they are solid and every bit as tough as a bayley knife.

Your money would be much better spent buying a custom knife that is not endorsed by a television personality.

I followed this thread with interest because I've always had a thing for the Bayley S4 knife in spite of the connection to Grylls which just makes it :jerkit: IMHO.

I saw that listing on Ebay too and sent a link to his site as well. I notice that there is now a warning on his site about it so I guess I wasn't the only one who did.

At any rate, I wasn't about to shell out $700 bucks for the real one and even if I was willing, Bayley no longer sells 'em; so I had been looking for a custom maker to make me something similar when I came across this thread with the link to the Martin knives site.

I am very glad I did. I just ordered one and after talking to Ed martin, I think it will be better than the actual Bayley knife. Ed sounds like a great guy too. It is going to be a very long three months before I see my knife and I can't wait to get my grubby paws on it.

I can't thank you enough for that link, I am really looking forward to getting this knife. Did I mention how anxious I am to get it? :D

Glad to read you got yourself a Martin. Please take and post some pictures when you receive it. I'd love to see what it looks like.

It will be my pleasure to do so. I got the BT Special with the standard clip point (no Swage on the blade) in S35 with black G10 scales.:thumbup::thumbup:

I am also very inclined to get a similar knife with S35V steel. Did they mention a wait time?

If a company like SOG can get blasted on this forum for making knives similar to other makers, why is it deemed perfectly OK for a custom maker to make a knife similar to the Bayley?

I wouldnt know anything about what you are refering to concerning people flaming SOG and I dont even want to know actually; but concerning the manufacturing of similar styles I do have an opinion on that.

It has been going on since the begining of time. How many Interperatations of Bowies are there? How about the Randall models? Loveless designs? Any "tactical" folder or fixed blade?

The Martin is not an exact replica. It is an interperatation with some valid differences. . . Actually improvements in my opinion. So what? It's called progress.

By the way, I'm not trying to be argumentative. I'm just expressing my opinion. YMMV. . .

I dont get the deal with copying knives, its a shape, just a shape, who cares if someone copies it. Not like its an invention.

Hi BP,

I'm interested too a similar bayley s4 knife , can you post some pictures of yours ?

Thanks

As for the Martin version stealing the Bayley design, well, you can't really say they have. I have held both and the differences are a world apart. The blade profile is roughly the same, but apart from that, they may as well be different knives. They feel totally different in the hand. So it isn't a clone, so no one should blast them for making it. As for it being an improvement, that isn't true either as it is a different knife. It's like saying a Loveless is an improvement on a Randall. It's nonsense as they are different folks making different knives.

Although anyone thinking of buying those Chinese copies should read this:- http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/t...?highlight=bayley+knife&p=9457270#post9457270

It might just save you from wasting your hard earned $$$$$
