bear grylls pro knife or Camillus Les Stroud Ultimate Survival

Whatever you do, whatever knife you end up getting, make sure it's endorsed by a TV "wilderness man".
Otherwise, how do you know it's OFFICIAL REAL SURVIVAL GEAR?!?!?

Was it?
Where I'm from, your friends make fun of you more / worse than your enemies :P
Celebrity endorsements aside, (and yeah, I realize OP is probably a 15yo boy) I don't think I've come across a Gerber or a Camillus knife in the last 5-10 years that I'd actually recommend over some of the numerous other options out there.

I have both, the BG Pro is a much better knife in my experience, for all the negative said about them, mostly by people that haven't actually owned/used one, the "BG Pro" is a solid knife. I was very underwhelmed with the Les Stroud Camillus stuff, after buying the folder and the fixed blade.

I was of the attitude that the BG knife was crap, until I actually examined one. I wouldn't have a problem using one in the woods at all. That said, I think that the Mora would be on my belt first.

EXACTLY!!! Hardly anyone actually stops to give the BG Pro a chance. They just assume its crap because its got Gerber and BG names on it. But no, its definitely not the best knife out there, even for the price. I think the Master Hunter or SRK by cold steel are good choices in that price range (I have both and they are both great). But again, ESEE 4.........Nuff said

The bear grylls ultimate pro, the newer version, is an over all good knife ! I really like the grip non the handle, and good over all steel for a number of uses compared to the original verison. Most survival knives are 1095 which keeps a good edge and is hard but isn't as tough as lower carbon steels and such, so they make the blades thicker to compensate. But the new ultimate pro has corrected all the negatives found on the original Gerber ultimate knife, such as the new version has a visible full tang, all the way down to the pommel making the blade and pommel all one solid piece of steel. The new Version has a better steel which is still tough but isn't as soft as the previous version, and they also ditched the serrated blade and now feature a straight edge. The new Version is Great and I have no complaints ! The original was already good, but the changes made have made this knife a beast and extremely bombproof !! I have had good survival knives break on me, but I have put my newer bear grylls ultimate pro knife through hell and have had no problems with performance or design, I like this thing, it just feels great in your hands. This knife is dependable and will servell !! The bear grylls ultimate pro has good weight but isnt overly heavy like alot of other knives. It's also a good thickness but not overly thick like alot of other knives ! I also think this knife has a great handle. The new ultimate pro has a 9Cr19mov steel blade which is a good all around steel with toughness, edge retention, and is corrosion resistant. I have a number of other knives such as the Becker bk2, Condor moonshiner, and condor cratlus, as well as case USMC mark 2, and some others and this is one of my favorites. It is a dependable knife that will last, and hold up well to just about anything you could use it for, which is good for 70$ or so.

Freddyb, I respectfully suggest that you put some more time in on the topic of steel. 1095, property heat-treated, is far tougher than any stainless steel. 1095 is used for plows and harrows, which routinely encounter rocks and roots while being propelled by tractors.

Glad you are happy with what you see as perfect. Not so many of us have found that perfection, but we keep looking. As time goes by, you may find other knives that you like.

I don't think it's perfect at all. I think the newer ultimate pro is damn good for a celebrity endorsed knife sold at Walmart lol, and is especially better then the Les stroud knife. But my point was that a survival knife should be well rounded and able to do a number of tasks as this does. There is more to it then just heat treatment. Some of these knives have vanadium or chromium added for better edge retention and or nickle for toughness. Some of my favorite knives are 1095, my ontario 498, and my Becker bk2, but I honestly prefer 1075 like that used by condor because its still a high carbon steel but it's lower carbon content makes it tougher, and still keeps a great edge and is Easy to sharpen. High carbon steel is one of the go to steel for survival knives, but for people who want a knife that is tough, keeps a good edge and can be used in and out of the water without worry 9cr19mov is a good choice. I'm just saying this is actually a good performer and not just some simple cheap celebrity endorsed knife. I know it looks very armature to buy a celebrity endorsed knife, but hat doesn't mean it can't be a good knife.

1095 is a great steel. 1095 is a tough steel, and I'm not saying stainless is tougher then 1095 by means, I simply said that this ultimate pro has held up better than SOME of my other knives made not 1095. 1095 is a good steel but it's hardness and carbon content is also it's weakness. I think 1075 is a good middle ground. It's lower carbon content makes it less likely to break or chip like 1095, but it's still a high carbon steel which holds a great edge. 9Cr19mov has a good balance between toughness , edge retention, and petition resistance. Which pretty much allows it to be more versatile, being used in and out of water. I think that is why a survival knife is all about, it's not about having a knife that holds the best edge, or is the hardest steel, or the toughest steel, but a knife that can do it all well, and i think Gerber did a nice job with this knife !!
