Just noticed there is a huge bunch of products being made under his name now, multi-tools, machete , folders, you name it !

Some of the stuff looks ok for the price though such as this ferro-rod with storage compartment for tinder:

What do ya think ?

The Machete looks ok as well actually:

I actually like most of those and the prices are good. I like the sheath on the fixed blade too, it look pretty functional.

I like the firesteel/tinder box combo better back when it was called the ESEE fire kit. :p

I dunno, Bear Grylls kit?

Now if it was Bare Girrls kit, I'd hit it!

Er....I mean......BUY it! Yeah, buy it, that's it! ;)

I don't know why the BG stuff is so popular. Is it just because of the "revolutionary" Rod in Sheath design or is it because a bunch of knowledge-less people are raving about it on Youtube?

I guess I'll never know. I'd rather use proven gear and knives from our Manufacturers and KnifeMakers. Why would I want a Gerber and bear Grylls survival knife when his show is so fake?

They look alright, except the fact I really don't like Gerber. I won't buy them, but I might try to test one or 2 out if I find someone who does buy them.

Gerber has been going for years and while I'd never say they were a top class product they do offer reasonable value for the money.
Not everyone on here can afford the best of stuff and we have to make do with what we can afford.

While much of Bear Grylls show is staged you can't deny the fact that the guy has still done a damn sight more in his life than most of us ever will. When I eventually climb everest, make numerous parachute jumps and join the SAS then I'll start knocking Bear as well...maybe !:D

Yeah, I hate to say it, but most of that really looks good. I actually find him to be entertaining, regardless of him being an idiot that sometimes dispenses dangerous and potentially deadly advice. I've even picked up a few cool tricks watching him.

I'll admit that I might be embarrased being seen with Bear branded gear, especially while teaching a wilderness survival course, lest some student takes it as an endorsement of his show and advice. I'm sure you could remove his name from the gear if you need to.

Is the whole line all made by Gerber? Looks all to be Made in China. Looks like his "Ultimate Knife" is a carbon steel version of the LMF II. The small fire steel in his survival kits looks to be ther Kershaw fire steel. His Parang has potential and is at least carbon steel, but doesn't state what the carbon steel is, and who knows what the heat treatment is like or if that handle is any good or just a blister causing machine. I like that everything has some blaze orange in it.

does he stage the scenes where he drinks his own urine?

also you obviously have to consider this line is manufactured for people that know far less about knives, so in that case Im sure that Gerber is qualified to make good product for them, and yes we all know it comes from China

Apples and oranges. An adrenaline junky doing adrenaline junky things doesn't command my respect. If you want to skydive and climb everest go for it. I personally think they're silly endeavors. He may have basic survival skills but he's by no means a survival guru. Now guys like Hood and Lundin DO have my respect when it comes to survival gear. I'll listen close to what they say but even then I'll probably do my own thing as far as gear. Especially that ATAX. :D

Gaudy and loud and straight from the set of a Thunderbirds movie. Not something I'd want to interact with very much at all, if ever.

Does that mean I think they're bad, no. Lots of first aid and rescue stuff is garish and hi-vis, and with good reason. When I think of “survival knife” rather than “utility knife” these are exactly the kinds of things I think of. Stuff for emergency use rather than every day use, rather like a fire extinguisher. These are exactly the kind of cheap but functional things I think should come under the rubric of survival. The kinds of stuff you stow away in your boat or have on a plane. I'm not into serrations but as we should all know by now the advantage of them is that they will keep on cutting when plain edges have long become useless. Good choice for this. The knives come with a generic “high carbon stainless” that we also should know to be meaningless marketing crap, but given the stable they are coming from I'm guessing 440A, 12C27, or even 425 ilks. Not great but no doubt good enough, especially as they can be made quite tough. The parang is grotesque but I think it is a better looking offering than either of the two rehashed Wiseman offerings at a fraction of the price. Genuine fit and forget survival stuff. I don't want any of it but I see the appeal.

for the price i think the stuff looks decent. i like the ferro rod with storage for 12 bucks thats pretty solid. i watch his show for entertainment value which it has (if nothing else you can laugh at most the stuff he does) and he does do stuff that he really shouldn't be doing to show people how to survive but either way the kit looks decent. if you don't like the orange just use a paint marker and cover it.

its not near as high end as a lot of kit out there but i think thats what they are going for

Prices on that stuff actually look really descent, on all of it. I agree with Pit, while his show gets a little carried away at times he is still entertaining to watch, he is one hell of an athlete. All of the survival shows ham it up a bit for the audience, so what if he does it more than the others. Don't know if I will buy any of it but props to him and Gerber, I am willing to bet with the marketing of it they will have good sales.

Or the UST Strikeforce, which came way before both of them. I do like the look of that Gerber one, but it seems like a lot of extra bulk.

it's all chinese made gerber garbage.

Of course it could not be ANY worse a product, than Bear is a 'survival instructor'.

his ultimate survival knife is just a gerber LMF 2 with a different badge. Same silly knife though.

OK, as much as it galls me to admit it, I'm kind liking this folder.
