Bear Grylls strikes again !

I dont own a Gerber and dont know much about them, but why are they China crap? If China can create a fake copy Nike shoe from scratch for $2 than im sure they can make a badass knife, is that more a production vs custom question?

They Jaws on the MiC ones tend break easily-either snapping at the joints, or the tips of the needle nose breaking. The MiT ones tend to be much more durable. Not to mention that you will notice pitting in the MiC ones, but not int the MiT ones.

In a nutshell, better quality control.

I really dislike Bear Grylls, so I don't think I would buy any of these. I've seen other machetes for better prices that I would prefer, and it would take a lot for me to justify having a product he endorsed--seriously I just wouldn't want to be reminded of it every time I used the thing. Even if I painted over it or something, I'd still know it was there.

Might be good gear for a SHTF bag. Not much of a Bear fan, can't blame him for trying to make a buck.

As for Gerber they used to make some good stuff. Some still is, but a lot is second or third rate IMHO.

The problem with the sheath design on the fixed blade is there is no place to stash your Hilton club card. How are you supposed to upgrade your shelter to a suite? Seriously though, I watched his show for entertainment until the episode where he "hunted" the wild boar that was tied to a tree. I can deal with an animal being slaughtered for food, just don't terrify it for no reason first. That was the end of the road for me. As far as this gear goes, I would look to other brands first.

A couple of things have sprung to mind since I posted;

1] I may have underestimated the steel at 440A, 12C27 or 425. These here do indeed have a strong similarity to the Metolius, and I've seen those in 154CM. That's a steel I really like, very similar indeed to ATS 34. I wouldn't gamble on it being that but still something to note. If I were to gamble my money would be on it being 9Cr18Mov, and I think that's a step up from what I originally suspected. Yay.

2] Despite the antipathy Grylls gets here on the basis of his entertainment show it is extremely desirable to me that he would do something like this. I don't believe in altruism so it isn't desirable to me in the sense that I applaud him, but for something else. Unlike Ray “there's no bore like a knife bore” Mears, Grylls is a lot more in touch with up and coming folks. I suspect those that are into the Mears stuff are middle aged or elderly gentlemen – people that on the whole watch him for academic interest on the history channel, or that have had the time to accrue more money than sense so sit on a waiting list for a knife like his, at a ludicrous price, and buy Bahcos off his site at twice the price one can get them at other places. Whereas Mears seems quite insular, makes his money from TV and his courses and and all that and buggers of home [and good luck to him] Grylls has a very good position to get down to earth with common folks. Note this thread with him out with the scouts. In short, I think it is fantastic that someone at the figurehead end of the scouting movement, that gets out and interacts with scouts, should be encouraging knives and knife related stuff. For such a person to flat out endorse a product I think is a huge blessing whether that person be Grylls or anyone else in that role.

3] “BTW, am I the only one that feels a Bic lighter is more useful than a firesteel?”

No, Zippo, Ronson, Clipper, Bic, I'd reach for any of these before I had to dig a spark rod out of the first aid kit.

Lighters are great for one of your three ways to make fire. But they can break, run out of fuel, get wet etc. So a firesteel in a sheath like that still makes sense.

I'm actually liking the look of that machete. I may pick one up to toy around with.

As far as Bear Grylls is concerned, I have no doubt that the man understands survival. What he portrays on TV is pure entertainment, but I honestly think that if you dropped him off in the middle of nowhere with some really minimal kit he'd make it out just fine. I just ALSO think that what he actually knows is rarely demonstrated on his show. :p

If it means a large chunk of the poulation goes out and purchases gear and starts them thinkin about survival and looking after themselves then this must be a good thing.

We all started somewhere and over time found the gear that we liked and developed our own systems.

Bear Grylls has indeed done more than most of us will ever do, I respect that!

I find the whole ' I hate Bear so I'm not going to buy them ' really weird. If Justin Bieber bought out a line of survival gear, as long as it was good value and usuable I'd get it. I really couldn't care less what name/colour/brand symbol etc is on the damn stuff stuff when I'm cold and using it to get a fire going !

I'm guessing that is the first Justin Bieber reference in W&SS. You're always one step ahead Pit! :D

OK, as much as it galls me to admit it, I'm kind liking this folder.

It's basically a drop point Metolius.

I waiting for the Bear Grylls Buck 110 in 1095 Carbon. :D

I would never buy anything that bat killing @$$hole sham of a survivalist would put his name on. I also just lost even more respect for Gerber for teaming up with him.

Don't forget this!

And this design is a sore wrist waiting to happen not to mention a big loss in cutting efficiency. If the handle came in instead of back (think traditional Golok) it would have the possibility to be a good chopper/machete.
