Bear Grylls uses Cold Steel

It looks like I've identified the folder Bear uses in his show Man vs Wild as a combo edge Cold Steel Voyager. My first reaction was "Someone needs to get this guy a better knife before he dies out there!" but the knife handled whatever he threw at it, including bashing the spine with a rock to chop wood.

Anyone ever had one of these? I'm thinking about picking one up just to play with and test.

Either way I think we should vote on the survival knife he needs to have on the show and send him one.

Maybe he wants a knife that he wouldn't shed a tear over if it was lost or broken. He probably takes his "good" knife with him when he goes out without the film crew.

i have two voyagers. an xl tanto and a l tanto serrated. i use the l tanto as one of my edc's.

these knives are sharp. very sharp. my edc is about 5 years old and still has the factory edge on it. it has never needed to be sharpened.

the xl scares people when i open it, so i don't carry it as my edc.

both knives are very light for there size, strong, and very versatile.

i just remembered a writer in one of the recent issues of blade magazine wrote that he has a 15 year old voyager that still performs like day one. i think he said it was his edc as well.

I must have missed the folder. I thought he always used a fixed blade knife.

He was useing the Folder on the Alaska episode, which aired last night.

In the Alps he used a SAK Trekker with Black Handles. My bad it was a Wenger Serrated Mountaineer.

I thought in the jungle episode he was using a Sog sheath knife. maybe a seal pup elite or revolver

Jediknight,

You wouldn't expect him to use a Rambo knife, now would you? Most folks who find themselves lost in wilderness don't have fancy, super thick bowies on them, most likely a cheap folder or a SAK. Survival isn't planned.

No, a Rambo knife is not a good knife. The Cold Steel Voyager is a good knife. I just looked at one in a store and ordered it online. I guess I was just surprised when I identfied it.

I have a plain-edge cold steel voyager tanto point with a four inch edge. It's a good knife for the money, and it's easy to sharpen and keeps an edge fairly well. It won't flick open as smoothly or as quickly as the Spyderco Endura or BM Griptillian that I own, but it didn't cost nearly as much as those two either. I wish cold steel would make a voyager with nested liners (like Spyderco's Endura 4), but that would just up the price. I consider the Voyager to be a good knife for someone who is just getting into the world of knives that are superior to the ones you can pick up at Wal-Mart. The Voyager is also the knife I reach for when I need to do something that might abuse the knife, and don't want to risk damaging one of my more expensive knives. Once when I was installing a dead bolt into my home's wooden back door, I used a hammer to tap the butt of my Voyager's handle and used the tanto point as a wood chisel. I would probably never use an Endura 4 like that. However, the Voyager did not seem to sustain any damage from this. It's tougher than it looks.

My first decent locking folder was a CS Gunsite II, which is pretty much just a partially serrated large Voyager. It holds an edge well, sharpens to a good edge easily, and it's held up to whatever I've thrown at it the last few years. Now that I've gotten more into Benchmade and Spyderco, it's my beater. I keep it in my jacket pocket these days. It opens easily with gloves on, or just with cold hands.

On man vs wild tonight bear grylls was using a gerber gator folder. Well at least thats what it looked like to me. Its the one where hes in Hawaii on the volcano. I could be wrong but thats what it looked like to me

Anybody ever think that the show might get some advertising dollars from knife manufacturers? ie "Use our knife, and we will sponsor this episode of the show" I don't know, but I thought it was a possibility as he has different knives every episode.
