bear grylls utlimate survival knife by Gerber

I would buy it if it was made out of that H1 rust proof steel that would up it's survival use somewhat

According to Midway it's 7Cr17MoV. I don't want to "deal spot" but this is what they say about it:

Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate Fixed Blade Knife 4.75 Serrated Drop Point 7Cr17MoV Stainless Steel Blade TacHide Handle Orange and Black

A reviewer on Amazon posted a reply he got directly from Gerber also saying that the steel was "7Cr17MoV".

I was just curious. I got this knife recently and I can't find what kind of stainless steel it is. All it says is high carbon stainless steel. anyone know the exact type?

IIRC, this knife is made in China. For knives made in China, Gerber uses Chinese steel cognates for 440A or 420HC.

I see. so based on that interpretation the bear grylls knife could potentially be 440a steel. Well I guess that answers my question somewhat. thanks to all of you who responded. It was most helpful.

Vaunripped, we often contrast high carbon steels with stainless steels. Of course, all steel has carbon, and the percent is small, the differences usually minor. Carbon steel won't have much if any of other elements alloyed to it, like chromium or vanadium, although a few otherwise (high) carbon steels do.

Stainless steels also have carbon and some of them have quite a bit -- high carbon stainless steels -- but they also have a lot of other elements, for various purposes, including corrosion resistance. We discuss a lot of steel questions here in the General Knife Discussion forum. Browse the forum list, search for "steel", or just ask. We have a lot of real experts here.

ok thanks, I dont mind admitting i had no idea.

From what I've seen it also comes off the shelf in a plastic blister pack with blinding orange plastered all over it, surviving the sales mosh pit it would seem is the only thing the B.G knife has been designed for.

I like the sheath, however my experience with Gerber has all been bad. My money goes elsewhere these days.
