lol if you opened this then you must be curious to see what kind of nasty things im gona say about him:p

actually i kind of was just wondering who loves him, who hates him and just what you guys think of him. im probably gona be the minority by saying that i think he's a pretty cool guy. theres alot of things ive learned from him and i like how he always finds a way. now i realize you wouldnt want to do alot of the things that he does if you were really surviving like jump into freezing cold water in freezing temps and go cave dwelling while your lost. i think most the time hes just tryin to show you how to get out of those bad situations if you somehow ended up in them and alot of people see it as "if your tryin to survive then you should go runnin through wildfires". idk, i take some stuff and leave alot of it but i do think that its pretty interesting some of the things he does, not to mention i like his pants and knife:thumbup:i just dont want to pay 600 bucks for a blade, and then have his name on it(little cheesy):D i also know he gets alot of flack for the rumors about him stayin in hotels and whatever but i dont really care or blame him if he does(who would want to really be surviving that often for a t.v. show, apparently not les stroud either)

so thats it,what do guys think about him?

What the hell kind of pant does he wear anyhow? I assume the black areas are an abrasion resistant material. I've been curious, since he knees and ass always wear out on me outdoors.
I think a lot of what he does is ridiculous and a sure way to get yourself killed, but that's his style, and it does give a little insight into those extreme circumstances. As a side note, I recognize a lot of his techniques from the SAS survival manual and I think the idea there was to survive while "getting something done" as in getting somewhere or completing a mission, so I always take his show with a grain of salt.
I know there are other ways to find water in the desert than to squeeze an elephant turd, but if you gotta be fast about it, that makes some sense I suppose.
Last, I have to say....he needs to hang out here and learn to care for his knives. When your life is REALLY on the line, treating your blade like he does is a recipe for failure.

I wouldn't take anything he does as a good idea.
In one episode he drinks untreated water, which gives him the squits, so he then boils it from there on. Too late I'm afraid.
He climbs down a waterfall because he's in such a rush to get out of the jungle. Such a rush to die.
He batons with a rock. Come on, really. How amateur.

And I notice all over the internet that it seems to be people with limited experience who hold him up as a role model.

I enjoyed watching him eat deer pellets and stick his brown tongue out.

I haven't seen any of his episodes so I can't comment, other than to say he appears to polarise peoples opinion.

Kind regards
Mick

Anyone else make pants like that?

Definitely like the design as well, but agreed they are kinda pricey.

Swedish Haglofs makes pants with reinforced knees and butt. They come in different version depending on the intended season-use and how tough/wear resistant you want them to be.

Ive got their mountain pants and highly recommend them.

Dont know if theyre sold in the US, but theyre pretty big in europe and UK webshops have them.

The other big brand here is Fjallraven, excellent brand too and top of the line pants.

The show can be very entertaining and he does spill out some regional tidbits of info. He is always very close (seemingly) to death with his stunts. He drinks his pee a lot too and that is hilarious. Don't try to be Bear, but do try to remember what he does so you can do the opposite if you are faced with a choice of underwater cave swim or not.

I haven't learned very much of his shows, but I like to watch them. They are entertaining and I like to see the landscapes that he is hiking through. I also like his British sense of humor.

I enjoy his shows from an entertainment perspective. I have a whole lot more respect for Les Stroud though and think of Survivorman as a documentary and Bear vs Wild as a soap opera

I agree he is entertaining. Les has a lot more pertinent info, but is depressing to watch sometimes.

I like Bear. He's definitely a showman, that's for sure. I find his show entertaining and interesting. From interviews I've seen and read, he strikes me as a guy I wouldn't mind meeting if given the chance.

He batons with a rock. Come on, really. How amateur.

Since Lofty Wiseman shows this in the SAS Survival Handbook I don't know if I'd call it ameteurish.

Bear Grylls is entertaining and if kids see him and want to get outdoors because of the show I appluad him. Hopefully these same kids will have parents teaching them the right way to do things, not the Bear way.

Its just a tv show. Entertainment. Ratings for Discovery. Advertising revenue. Its not a SERE course. :)

I like the show, and Grylls seems like a pleasant guy. I liked Survivorman better, and have all 3 seasons on dvd.

Much of man vs. wild is totally fakey, which is fine as long as you know it.

The guy can climb. No doubt about that. Nothing fakey there.

On youtube you can see clips where he supposedly is traversing some remote terrain, and you see a highway 100 yards behind him busy with cars.

The stuff about making a torch and swimming through a cave to save time is complete asinine.

But it is just entertainment after all.
