bear grylls

he makes for some good entertainment but never would i consider using any of his methods

survivor man however i happen to love, while he may not use the easiest or most conventional methods there is a lot you can pick up from him

Swedish Haglofs makes pants with reinforced knees and butt. They come in different version depending on the intended season-use and how tough/wear resistant you want them to be.

Ive got their mountain pants and highly recommend them.

Dont know if theyre sold in the US, but theyre pretty big in europe and UK webshops have them.

The other big brand here is Fjallraven, excellent brand too and top of the line pants.

Awesome, thanks for the info.

Watching the Will Ferrel episode right now since you guy mentioned it :D I had it saved on the tivo :o

If I recall correctly, I believe his first season was very explanatory on how to get to civilization when a "tourist" trap goes bad. Then in season 2 he was discovered in a hotel, and after that it was all added hype to keep people hooked on the show. I still watch it because it's the only thing on with different outdoor scenery and knife usage. I wish Les Stroud would pop up with a surprise season to save my sanity :)

I'll still sit on the couch with my favorite knife and LMF in hand while I watch the show like a kid watching his favorite cartoon :p

I like Bear. He seems pretty cool, and I watch him for the entertainment value. Les is better when it comes to real world survival, but Bear has the "what did he JUST DO?" market cornered.

Like keeping his good side toward the camera as he chows down
on some hapless Camel Spider or falls off a cliff.

I get the distinct feeling that he could be a heero but that he'd
end it with a "Isn't that dramatic?" pose and a reckless, fighting grin.

Give me Les Stroud's sardonic, dry wit any day.l)

What do I think of Bear Grylls?
I think he's a guy I'd like to hang out and toss a few back with.

His show?
It's very entertaining.
Now sure how many actually take it as serious advice though. I mean, to me he's like the Crocodile Hunter. I assume the same percentage of viewers go out to see how close they can get to a spitting cobra as drink their own pee.

I'm not keen of bear grylls. his programs are more stunts than anything, and some of the stuff he does is a really bad idea in a "survival situation".

I'm still not convinced he was the best choice for chief scout either, but there you go.

I am not as impressed with Bear doing all the waterfall climbs or decents. I seen an episode that he jumps out onto a tree top from a rock face and climbs down to the lower ravine for whatever reason. But I am impressed with his cameraman who does all the things he does whille filming it and carrying all the camera equipment, that guy has to be tuff for sure. Randy

I watched a few episodes last night for the first time....captivated the kids for a change. Entertaining yes...sense of humour yes. (Particularly when he talked about "going old school" with that wild pig after jumping on him :-)

As one of the previous posters alluded to....he always is trying to get from point A to point B as opposed to just staying alive until someone finds him. It seems more like escape and evade techniques (i.e., 'a mission') vs pure survival...hence all the crazy stunts.

I watched one or two of his eariler shows, but when he jumped into a glacial meltwater stream to float down a snow covered mountain in winter, I realized he was a freaking idiot and have not watched since. :jerkit:

Yeah its kind of like watching First Blood, without the guns, isn't it??? When I'm in the woods, I'm rarely being chased by anything. Not sure what the hurry is all about.

The "Man vs Wild" marathon was on yesterday. Caught up on a number of shows that I missed. I like the guy. He is a showman. He also seems to like to show his tush. Thank God for blurring. :)

I was impressed with the scenery on the "Alabama" show. Didn't know there was anywhere in Alabama that pretty. For those that don't know, it was filmed in the Little River Canyon east of Fort Payne which is also in part a state park. I checked the map and there are roads mostly on both sides of the canyon that parallel the river. So he could have gotten out pretty much anytime he wanted to as long as he found a good spot to traverse the canyon walls.

He had his hands full with the pig. The man has some gonads. I am not much for grabbing the top of a tree and riding it to the ground to bypass a sheer cliff decent. Looks darn dangerous.

At the end he tries to flag down a logging truck for a ride. He was late to the road and decided to hitch a ride. State Police arrested him for that per a newspaper article in Fort Payne. That is funny!

But taken as merely entertainment i do enjoy the show.
Like Mears, Stroud and Les Hiddens much better though.

Bear Gryls is a pretentious showboater.

All that jumping out of planes and helicopters.
Clambering around on dangerous cliffs for no good reason.
A hilarious amount of stuff involving his own urine.
Gratuitous closeups of him loudly chewing beetles and grimacing theatrically.

I frequently laugh out loud when watching his show.
As Cpl Punishment said above it's kinda like The Crocodile Hunter.
Even down to the almost manic level of constant enthusiasm.

(BTW, should someone start a pool on how long until Bear gets KIA too?)

All that said though I think there is a silver lining:

He frequently does things that are so crazy that I would NEVER think of them. In a real survival situation having that kind of open mindedness is probably a good thing. (Even though 90% of the time you'd be better off doing things less likely to leave you with broken bones. )

I like the show, its entertaining rather than educational.
Sure a lot of the stuff he does you should not do, and sure he has people around to help him out of trouble, along with hotels to stay in and real food to eat...
Saying all that I still like him and have found the odd bit of information that would be useful + plus I like it that he uses a knife and a fire stick and not much else.

I like Bear Grylls. I like his modesty, his candid statements that he is sometimes 'scared' and his british humor. Let me know, when anyone of you have a youtube video of yourself jumping into a frozen river, or swimming under the ice. I would love to see it ; )
