Bear Grylls

I like Ray Mears and his attitude, the way he says "Here, locals do it his way". He visit people to learn from them.

I like Les Stroud, because sometimes he does stupid things, and you see him fail. Like the time he cut himself while trying to get water from a water vine in Costa Rica. He doesn't try to show he's the best.

Bear Grylls. Well, his show is named "Man vs Wild", don't know if he decided it himself, but that sounds like the opposite of my attitude in the woods.

Just to stir the pot a little...

I was debating Bear with a friend recently. I expressed concerns that if people found themselves in a survival situation, they might imitate Bear Grylls to save themselves, thus endangering themselves further.

My friend looked at me and said
"Yeah but anyone who watches Bear Grylls and thinks that what he does is sensible doesn't go very far into the bush anyway."

I agree with you.

For me. Rey Mears is more focused on history of bushcraft and the heritage and knowledge that need to be educated before it gets lost in todays urban lifestyle.

Les Stroud does make mistakes and he does not hide it. He tries and fail like I do and he admits that medical staff is available if need be. Heck. They have a camp usually not far away.

His episode with him in Africa, probably the Kruger National Park, aired tonight and there were a few things he could have done differently but for our type of Savannah he did well. Did not walk at the warmest time of day, caught rain water, filtered water. He did not know of all the animals sounds and habits etc but I can understand that. He is not familiar with all the sounds and he said he does not know what everything is.

Bear....I just watch it for the views these days of places I probably will never see. I personally do not get any new educational experience from his shows.

He's more of a mountaineer than a survivalist. They have very different perspectives on things.

If you want see someone talk about real survival issues check out WildernessOutfitters on youtube. I think Dave Canterbury might be getting a tv deal too actually since he says his likeness is not under contract.
